History shows that any new human-replacement tech is bound to suffer massive initial setbacks as humans always feared being replaced by something far more efficient and dependable, and also a human-creation which always succeeds, eventually!

(They must have even detested those creative / inventive humans, as suicidal or self-defeating ?)

Sabotage by affected parties?

Humans first resorted to sabotage of such tech / inventions, as in the case of the Sewing Machine, the first few prototypes of which were totally destroyed by smashing them onto the streets, by the protesting Seamstresses and their supporters.

Even those earliest prototypes, built by the inventor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, were so superior, they stitched with seams (joints or stitches) stronger than the basic cloth. No wonder the seamstresses feared loss of job! They were faster too!

The Teleprinter

Then there were skillful, agile Morse Decoding operators at telegraph offices. Only to be replaced by Telex or Teleprinter (invention of Reichspost ) which directly printed the (German / English) text on to a paper issuing out of a paper roll.

We could see, in WW II movies, these early adaptations of the Typewriter machines fitted with electromechanical solenoid-like add-ons operating the typewriter keys, then known as “Teletyping”. The intelligent and ultra-fast Morse Code technicians all got replaced en masse?

Telex itself was replaced by Fax (Facsimile) machine which just transmitted the handwritten, even signed (signature-added) message, not having to dictate and manually type a message as typewriter keys inputs.

Farm mechanization

Harry Ferguson invented the land tilling / ploughing tractor and demonstrated it in the UN Assembly, as a tool to feed the millions of hungry human beings of the world, by speeding up the crop farming process. Sowing, Reaping machines, combine-harvesters followed suit.(Massey Ferguson, the collaborators of TAFE – Tractors And Farm Equipments Ltd., Chennai, India are an offshoot of this inventor-company). So, mechanization of non-intelligent, skilled labour might have been relatively easier, compared to AI.

Computers Vs Humans

When computers came, lots of clerks and qualified, experienced employees felt their worst enemy has come. Long back, at ISI (Indian Statistical Institute), Kolkata there were massive demonstrations against the IBM computer that was just arriving. That IBM Mainframe was perhaps one of the first 3 computers to be imported into India.

AI making inroads despite initial hiccups

Self-Repairing and Self-Replicating robots have already made inroads as early as the 2010s.

An MNC GCC (Global Capability Center) in India is considering , within a year, a cadre reduction of junior staff from 495 to 5 with AI adoption.

16,000 employees replaced by AI at Amazon. Menial jobs at Logistics positions in their Warehouse too are being replaced by dexterous robots. It can get more ruthless. Brace yourself.

A Tesla autonomous car, couple of years back in the USA, fatally crashed into a crossing truck at an intersection as the colour of the truck was similar to the background evening sky. Such errors are far fewer in between now as AI is fast improving.

So, AI in its present form of either Alpha or Beta version may suffer setbacks but ultimately replace “huge swathes” of skillful / expert humans. It is a fact. It may be only a matter of time?

Thank the inventor-folks — if you are an AI hater — releasing untested or unfixed (of bugs) versions hastily into the market only to face market backfire!

Thus the hopefuls of those sticking along in the job develop a false sense of superiority — even job security? — that they, being humans, can never be replaced. They are just sitting ducks.

But the Autonomous cars of today, for instance, are far more advanced. Equipped with NVIDIA high performance, high speed chips and MATLAB mathematical concepts, and myriad sensors, these cars can “see” and identify the road users (humans) and objects. The sensor-fusion LIDAR camera  can identify if it is a fog, or a bush, or is it a human being ahead of it in the road. Also, from the angle between the standing person’s legs, that is, if the legs are apart, the vehicle senses that the person ahead, on the sidewalk, may move in the path of the vehicle. The vehicle even verifies if the person / pedestrian has seen the vehicle approaching or not. If he or she is unaware of the vehicle approaching, the vehicle is even more cautious, ever ready to apply the brakes. If a ball comes rolling across the road ahead, the AI of the car even expects a child chasing or following the ball. This tech is known as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Such ADAS incorporates TCS (Traction Control System), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) which integrates suspension, steering and braking systems and many others as one cohesive system to make the modern day car nearly like a living being (a 4-legged, agile animal) with locomotion – and almost as sure-footed as a mountain-goat!

Recently, it was reported that the AI-enabled surgical robots were making mistakes due to the robot wrongly identifying some human anatomical zones / organs. But, the experts are exhorting that a mixed approach of human experts (surgeons) assisting the AI-enabled robots will be more practical, till the dependability of AI improves.

Samsung which invented the internet-enabled Refrigerator around the year 1997 is now marketing AI-enabled Fridges which suggest a cooking recipe based on the fridge contents. The rice-and-dried-fish-to-electronics-chips giant is tasting success after success.

Aspiring Post Graduate Students are banking on Chat GPT/Gemini for the SOP (Statement Of Purpose) for admission into elite universities of USA. It will be only a matter of time before they find out what the selecting Professor likes in a prospect student and infuse those into the Report. Such AI tools are triumphantly used by students for the Project Work, doctoral thesis also.

The likely Forerunners of AI

 In the late 1970s, Alfred Teves GmbH of Germany, (now Conti tech), developed car Disc Brakes with Disc wear (Dashboard) indicators which are just an electric circuit-completing terminal embedded into each Brake Pad. Then the Brake Fluid level indicators of the Fluid Reservoirs followed. For dual brakes, there was a  tiny piston, in parallel, which was balanced by equal fluid pressure on both ends and the loss of pressure by brake fluid leak of any one brake circuit will push this piston to activate a micro-switch for Dashboard Alert. This warned the driver of the partial brake failure and that the stopping distance will be nearly double. Such primitive pure electro-mechanical sensing devices in-built into mechanical assemblies might have inspired the embedded systems which came later. These have morphed into advanced sensors and actuators of today.

Bertram Raphael of SRI (Stanford Research Institute), Author of the book, The Thinking Computer, used to research on AI Robots and Machine Vision as far back as 1968.

Why the successful  advent of AI is certain?

 There are now scientific ways to accurately capture, collate the knowledge of thousands of experts, like lawyers, brain or kidney, or heart surgeons, and organize them in an orderly fashion for assimilation by machines / artificial systems for designing the algorithms.

Statistics and Probability Sciences, high speed Processors, advanced Reliability Testing
methods and entrepreneurs willing to invest in these abound. Aided by cash-rich corporations which suffer at the hands of unionised highly skilled labour, AI sweep is now imminent with the advent of advancements of Data Sciences.

First it was Parallel Processing of Supercomputers, then High Speed Processing, then High Performance Computing but now it is Quantum Computing using Cloud.

According to a Readers’ Digest article, the more diverse or varied are the subjects a human brain holds, the more creative and imaginative the brain becomes. But, even the most advanced brain is not as good as an artificial chip which can capture the intelligence of thousands of Subject Matter (Domain) Experts as an AI System.

We have seen Cyborgs, Sci-Fi Terminator movies, and now, even the brain thought process has been mapped.  Ethical questions apart, AI is certainly the future. The extreme electric power and cooling water thirst of AI Supercomputers will also need to be addressed by the society.

Biomimicry

Right from the bats which inspired the RADAR and SONAR and the honeybees which made men invent the DuPont Nomex honeycomb panels of Aircrafts and Satellites, Nature has been inspiring (non-materialistic) Intelligence also. Thank God, they don’t sue us for Copyright Infringement!

Did we say, we can gather the knowledge of thousands of experts? We were wrong! We should have said that not only thousands of human experts but also from Mother Nature. That is, from all living creatures, and also non-living matter — their survival tactics, behaviours, communication and reproduction methods, self-preservation strategies,  proliferation, extreme tenacity, thriving in adverse conditions — like the strange organism / bacteria which survives on nuclear reactor cores, how they mitigate risks, etc. Man has to just look at Nature for exceptional, effective solutions for his managerial, financial, family, engineering, emotional problems. The solutions for millions of problems of humankind are already staring at man, from Nature. Already analogies among Nature, Universe, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering can be seen and studied / compared against each other.

Quest for excellence – a Triumph of Life?

The more are the failures encountered by AI experts, the more determined they are driven to perfect and excel in their outputs. Be it heavier-than-air flight, Space Research, vaccines, or Defence Tech, the humans thrive on challenges.

Human civilization always stands on the shoulders of the discoveries, inventions, patents and the ensuing advancements of the (primitive) previous generations, to reach for the sky and the capabilities and potential of the culmination of the diverse knowledge domains of today — which reinforce each other exponentially in effect, and their myriad combinations are infinite.

Already there’s a massive chips shortage, experienced in the automotive, home appliances sectors, driven by the surge in AI Systems demands.

Those who are adamant in not unlearning their outdated knowledge and unwilling to adapt to the changing times – by re skilling / Up Skilling – will be the losers?

Going by the Accounting Principles, an Organization is to be Construed, Conceptualized and Carried-on for Perpetual Existence – in colloquial terms, Ever Lasting & Never Ending for Generations to come. When Exits are planned and structured, as in the case of Strategic and Tactical Decisions, its very controlled and the impact of which is carefully taken into consideration prior to implementation. In the 3rd case, Business Conditions induced Exits are usually uncontrolled and therefore are undesirable, resulting in People Issues and Emotional Conflicts, Business issues apart.

As the Famous adage goes “Today, You need to run to remain in the same place. And to Succeed, You need to run faster than the fastest.” This is same for Businesses. To remain where they are, they have to run atleast to match the speed of Industry Growth. And if they are to Grow, they have to run faster than their Competitors – as Growth comes only by acquiring Market and Business Share.

Written for two of my all time Favourites, and with very due respects to other fellow Champions. As in Business Excellence, Sporting Excellence is achieved by methodical, consistent processes which are colloquially known as Practice.

It’s more often Repeatability which leads to Reliability, very much as in the case of Businesses. Errors and Variances, end up in Results. Failures are then used by Champions for RCAs (Root Cause Analysis) and CAPAs (Corrective & Preventive Actions). This ensures Failure is not an End and Success is Never Final, for Sustained Successes, much similar to Business requirements.

They may not be typical Naturals….but they have matured enough to reinvent themselves…reminding the rest in the field and to whom it matters, its still better to have them very much in the scheme of things…One a Cricketer and the other a Tennis Player.

It’s more than a liking and loving…it’s not a mere Fan Moment, which i resist to confine myself to….

The King Kohli and The Super Consistent Djoko….both of whom still stand shoulder to shoulder with Young Guns and Raw Talents…Yet again, i will hold myself from calling them Geniuses…

As I submit this piece to their 4Ds – Drive, Determination, Discipline and of course Dedication, Hard Work apart. Money did not change them. Fame did not change them. And more importantly Age did not defy them what they deserve.

Qualities which i liberally subscribe whenever i get an opportunity to address Budding Professionals and Entrepreneurs. For me these two are Sporting Professionals, much beyond being good players – in addition to being icons, who have brought in new dimensions the way each of their sport is played.

Only wish, we shall be lucky enough and be a privileged lot to watch them for some more time.

The global mining industry faces a growing shortage of engineering talent, but new research from engineering group, Sandvik, suggests this challenge could be turned into one of the sector’s greatest opportunities.

The report, _The future of mining talent: What STEM graduates really think, and what the industry can do about it_, reveals that while awareness of mining remains low among young engineers, many are open to joining the sector once they understand its modern realities and role in tackling the global energy transition.

Based on a survey of 824 STEM students and graduates across nine countries, the study found that nearly 40% of respondents are unfamiliar with mining, and a similar proportion cite this as a reason for not considering it as a career path. Yet the same survey also shows a major opportunity for change: more than 90% said they would be more likely to consider a career in mining if convinced that it contributes meaningfully to addressing climate change.

“The findings highlight a huge untapped opportunity for our industry,” said Mr. Stefan Widing, President and CEO of Sandvik. “When young engineers understand that today, mining is not just about extraction, it’s about tackling some of the world’s most important challenges using digitalization, automation, and electrification, they see a sector where they can apply their skills to make a real difference.”

The report also highlights strong motivators for new graduates: high salary potential, use of cutting-edge technologies, and complex engineering challenges. Conversely, safety concerns and perceptions of negative environmental impacts remain key deterrents.

With almost half of the US mining workforce expected to retire by 2029 and engineering enrollments declining at multiple universities globally, the report calls for greater collaboration between companies, academia, and policymakers to rebuild the talent pipeline through education, cultural change and evolution of industry perceptions.

Across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the digital transformation journey of companies using SAP solutions has reached a decisive phase. The question for most organizations is no longer whether to transform, but how to do so efficiently and securely.

The 2025 valantic SAP study on SAP Transformation Trends in the DACH Region highlights how companies are navigating this shift. Migration to SAP S/4HANA, the move to cloud-based architectures, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) are driving new priorities.

While many firms began their transformation years ago, this year’s findings show a clear pivot toward hybrid migration models, private cloud infrastructures, and pragmatic AI adoption aimed at measurable business value.

SAP S/4HANA Migration – Where do Companies Stand ?

SAP S/4HANA continues to be the foundation of enterprise modernization. The study’s data reveals a dynamic landscape:

• 29 % of companies are currently planning their migration.
• 40 % are in the midst of implementation.
• 27 % have already completed their migration.
• Only 4 % have no migration plans at all.

This means that nearly every SAP using company in the DACH region is on the S/4HANA journey in one way or another. What varies is the pace, scope, and strategy.

Companies that have already completed the transition report improved data consistency and better integration with new-generation applications. Those still planning or executing their migration often cite resource availability and integration complexity as the main bottlenecks.

The transition is also creating new skill demands within IT departments. SAP experts capable of handling both traditional ECC systems and S/4HANA landscapes are in particularly high demand — and often in short supply.

Migration Strategies & Operating Models

The Rise of Hybrid Strategies

A major trend identified by the study is the strong shift toward hybrid migration strategies. In 2025, 57 % of companies prefer what many call an extended brownfield or Bluefield approach — combining the stability of existing systems with the innovation potential of new functionalities.

This hybrid model allows organizations to reuse proven business logic while selectively introducing modern modules and analytics capabilities. In contrast, the pure brownfield approach has declined dramatically — from 41 % in 2024 to just 10 % this year.

In practical terms, the hybrid path reflects a more balanced philosophy which is to evolve but not to disrupt. Rather than undertaking a risky full rebuild, companies are optimizing their landscapes step by step, reducing downtime and mitigating implementation risk.

Shifting Operating Models

The choice of infrastructure is equally telling. Private cloud environments have nearly doubled in popularity, jumping from 31 % to 58 %. At the same time, on-premises systems continue their steady decline — from 59 % last year to just 20 % today.

Public cloud adoption has reached 22 %, used primarily by companies in industries with standardized processes and lighter compliance requirements, such as retail or services.

The preference for the private cloud highlights a key regional characteristic: DACH enterprises value control and data sovereignty, particularly in highly regulated sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and finance.

Cloud Transformation – Promise and Practicality

Cloud transformation remains one of the most critical yet complex parts of the digital journey. The benefits like scalability, flexibility, cost transparency are clear. However, as the study reveals, companies continue to face a mix of technical, financial, and organizational challenges.

Main Barriers to Cloud Adoption

• 42 % cite cost as the top concern. While cloud pricing models promise pay-as-you-go efficiency, long-term costs can accumulate rapidly if not managed properly.
• 41 % express security and compliance concerns, particularly around data residency and GDPR obligations.
• 33 % highlight integration complexity and shortages of skilled cloud architects.

Legacy systems often add to these difficulties. Many enterprises operate hybrid environments where on-premises SAP modules must coexist with new cloud applications. This technical duality requires careful planning and often external expertise to ensure seamless connectivity and consistent governance.

The Balancing Act

Companies recognize the transformative potential of the cloud, but many still approach migration with caution. As one IT manager quoted in the study put it, “The cloud is not just a hosting decision; it’s an organizational change.”

In other words, cloud transformation is as much about processes and culture as it is about technology. Firms that combine technical migration with change management, retraining teams, revising workflows, and ensuring cross-department alignment are finding smoother adoption and faster ROI.

You’ve probably heard about LLMs — Large Language Models — floating around in conversations, headlines, or team meetings. They’re trained on gigantic amounts of text (imagine reading everything on Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and more), which helps them understand and generate human-like responses. Ask the right question (a.k.a. a prompt), and boom — you get a surprisingly good answer.

On their own, LLMs are a bit like goldfish.

They don’t remember what happened a moment ago, they don’t keep track of ongoing conversations or your specific context between interactions.

To build smart, conversational, and personalized Gen AI applications, you need more than just an LLM. You need a supporting architecture — a set of layers that provide memory, knowledge, and prompt optimization to help the AI feel more intelligent and useful. Here’s a quick look:

1. User Interface (Front End)

This is where the magic starts — from the user’s point of view. It might be a chat window, voice assistant, or a smart feature inside your app. The frontend captures input (text, images, voice) and displays responses in a way that suits your use case.

In tools like ChatGPT, users are expected to write clear prompts. That’s because LLMs — though incredibly knowledgeable — can’t read your mind. They respond best when you ask precisely. This is often called Prompt Engineering, but honestly, it’s more of a Prompting Art — knowing how to talk to the model so it truly understands what you want.

In business apps, the frontend may also help shape or enhance user input behind the scenes — so even vague questions become high-quality prompts before reaching the application layer.

2. Application Logic (Backend)

This is the brain behind the scenes. The backend handles user input, talks to the LLM, manages memory, adds relevant context, and delivers meaningful responses. Think of it as your app’s AI concierge, organizing everything to make the magic happen smoothly.

Here are the key component of application logic:

• Memory System – LLMs don’t remember anything between interactions. To make conversations feel natural, your app needs to manage memory. A memory system stores previous interactions and sends important parts to the LLM as context with every prompt, so it can respond more intelligently — like remembering what the user asked earlier.
• Knowledge Base – LLMs are trained on general data — they might not know about you or or example about your company’s policies, product details, or niche topics. That’s where a Knowledge Base comes in.

This system retrieve relevant info from your own data (like FAQs, documents, or databases) and augment it to the user prompt before sending it to the LLM. This process is called Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).

• The data is stored in a vector database, where each document/content is represented by a mathematical fingerprint (called an embedding).
• When a user asks something, we compare their query’s embedding to the stored embeddings (using similarity search) and fetch the most relevant content.
• This content is then injected into the prompt, giving the LLM exactly what it needs to give better, grounded answers.

Together, memory and knowledge retrieval make your Gen AI app feel smarter, more helpful, and deeply customized to your domain.

3. Large Language Models (LLMs)

At the heart of Gen AI applications are large language models like GPT, trained on massive datasets to understand and generate human-like language. These models are available through platforms such as Hugging Face, OpenAI, and others.

Fine-Tuning: A method to adapt a general-purpose, pre-trained LLM for specific business needs. Fine-tuning adjusts the model using domain-specific data, improving relevance and performance for targeted applications.

Some time we need to implement all of these concepts to achieve better result as per our business need. Next will develop all these concepts step by step.

Developing Gen AI Application

You might be surprised how easy it is to build your first Gen AI app. The best part? You don’t need to train your own LLM. Big players like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Hugging Face already provide powerful models that you can use through simple APIs.

In this example, we’ll use Google’s Gemini API, which is still free within usage limits — perfect for trying things out.

Setup LLM APIs Access

For simplicity, I’m using a Google Colab Notebook — no setup needed beyond your browser! But feel free to try this on your local machine too.

The fun part? You can even use Gen AI to help you write Gen AI code. Learning by doing the same in collab or in your favorite tool — what’s cooler than that?

That’s not what you were hoping for, right?

That’s because LLMs don’t know which Kuldeep you mean unless you give them more context.

This is where conversation and memory layers come into play. Let’s explore how to have a more meaningful interaction with the model in the next example by providing additional background during the conversation.

Conversation for LLM

What you get from a Gen AI model heavily depends on how you ask. The better your prompt, the better the answer. This is where techniques like giving the model a persona, adding context, or showing examples come in — these are called one-shot or few-shot prompting.

Sometimes, a single prompt isn’t enough. Just like in real conversations, you might need to go back and forth, ask follow-ups, or break things down into steps. This is where ideas like chain of thought or tree of thought prompting help — guiding the AI step by step to a better outcome.

To have a proper conversation with an LLM we need implement memory component to store the conversations, and pass on with every conversation. And the good news? Gemini makes this easy with its built-in chat API that remembers what you’ve said.

Implementing Basic RAG

Large Language Models (LLMs) like Gemini are powerful, but they aren’t all-knowing. They might not have the latest information about specific people, use cases, or private knowledge.

That’s where RAG comes in — Retrieval-Augmented Generation is a technique that fetches relevant information from an external source (like a website or document) and augments the prompt with this context before sending it to the LLM.

Let’s walk through a simple RAG implementation that pulls data from Kuldeep’s About page and uses it to generate accurate responses.

As explained earlier, embeddings are numerical representations of text that capture semantic meaning. When we generate embeddings for all our contextual data and store them in a vector database, we create a searchable knowledge base.

These embeddings can then be compared to the user’s query using similarity metrics — like cosine similarity — to find the most relevant content. Once identified, that content can be appended to the user’s prompt to provide a more accurate and context-aware response from the LLM.

Fine-Tuning

So far, we’ve worked with general-purpose LLMs using prompt engineering to steer their behavior. However, no matter how well we craft our prompts, public APIs and general models may still fall short of producing responses that align exactly with our desired tone, format, or accuracy.

That’s where fine-tuning comes into play.

Fine-tuning allows us to train a model on our own dataset, enabling it to respond in the specific way we want.

Below is a basic example of fine-tuning a Gemini model using Google’s Generative AI tools.

Even with a very limited dataset, the model adapts to the style we trained it for — consistently using a polite opening and closing format. That’s the power of fine-tuning. Of course, real-world scenarios would require much larger and more diverse datasets, along with proper evaluation and validation processes.

The world of technology is evolving at lightning speed. Every week, new AI models, frameworks, and services make headlines. With the hype around LLMs, Agentic AI, MCPs, and A2A systems, it’s easy to feel like we’re always playing catch-up.

But here’s the truth: without strong fundamentals, chasing the “next big thing” is like building a skyscraper on sand. A strong foundation ensures stability. That’s why, before diving deep into Generative AI, it’s critical to revisit the path that got us here.

This article is structured as a learning guide — a quick explainer – so you can use it to build the right base for your GenAI journey (and even prepare for AI/GenAI certifications).

We’ll cover the evolutionary path:

Machine Learning → Deep Learning → Generative AI → NLP → Speech → Computer Vision → Agentic AI

1. Machine Learning (ML): The Starting Point

At its core, machine learning (ML) is about teaching machines to learn from experience, just as humans do. Models are essentially mathematical equations trained on large datasets to predict outcomes (labels) based on given inputs (features).

The process of building ML models involves training on datasets, adjusting parameters, validating results on test data, and repeating this cycle until the results are satisfactory.

Two primary techniques define ML:

• Supervised learning: where we have labeled data with known outcomes.
• Unsupervised learning: where no labels exist, and the machine must find hidden patterns or groupings.

1.1 Supervised Machine Learning

It is generally built on historical observations where we have clear relation between outcome (label — y) and parameters ( x1, x2, x3…). and a model can be derived to represent that relationship in a mathematical form the model.

y = f(x1, x2, x3, …)

With this, we can predict outcomes for new data.

• Regression is used when predicting numeric values (e.g., predicting rainfall based on temperature and wind speed).
• Classification is used when predicting categories (e.g., diagnosing diseases from patient records).
  • Binary classification: two categories (true/false, positive/negative).
  • Multiclass classification: more than two categories.

Key steps in supervised learning include:

• Splitting data into training and test sets.
• Applying algorithms like Linear Regression (for regression) or Logistic Regression (for classification).
• Evaluating results using techniques such as confusion matrices, F1 score, MAE, MSE, or R².
• Iterating until results reach an acceptable accuracy.

1.2 Unsupervised Machine Learning

In contrast, unsupervised learning deals with data that has no labels. The goal is to uncover structure and relationships hidden within the data.

A common technique is K-Means clustering, where data points are grouped into clusters based on similarity. The algorithm keeps adjusting centroids until the clusters stabilize.

Evaluation here involves measuring separation between clusters — using metrics like silhouette scores or distances from cluster centers.

In many real-world scenarios, hybrid approaches combine supervised and unsupervised methods, allowing clusters to be labeled and then used for prediction tasks.

2. Deep Learning: Inspired by the Brain

Deep learning takes ML a step further by mimicking how the human brain processes information through neural networks.

Each artificial neuron applies a function to inputs, weighted by importance, and passes the output through an activation function to decide whether the signal continues.

Through repeated training (epochs), weights are adjusted using methods like gradient descent until errors are minimized. Networks with many layers are called deep neural networks (DNNs), which can handle complex tasks in regression, classification, natural language, and computer vision.

3. Generative AI: The Creative Leap

Generative AI (GenAI) represents a leap forward. Unlike traditional ML, it doesn’t just predict — it creates. With natural language prompts, GenAI can produce text, images, code, audio, and more. We have covered Generative AI Fundamental in recent article on Building Gen AI solutions.

The evolution here is tied to natural language processing (NLP):

• Early methods relied on tokenization and embeddings to represent words numerically.
• RNNs allowed sequential predictions but struggled with long contexts.
• Transformers revolutionized NLP by enabling parallel processing and introducing attention mechanisms.

This led to powerful transformer architectures like:

• BERT (encoder-based, by Google) for understanding context.
• GPT (decoder-based, by OpenAI) for generating coherent content.

Today’s LLMs are built on these foundations. Gen AI advancement has good impact on traditional AI ways of natural language, audio processing, and computer visions.

4. Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Core NLP tasks include:

• Language detection
• Sentiment analysis
• Named entity recognition
• Text classification
• Translation
• Summarization
• Conversational AI

Many cloud providers now bundle most of these into ready-to-use services over LLMs, but understanding the underlying mechanics helps us better use and evaluate them.

5. Speech Processing

Modern speech systems convert speech to text and text to speech in real time. Thanks to deep neural networks, today’s synthetic voices sound natural — closing the gap between human and machine communication.

These capabilities power applications in accessibility, customer support, and live transcription.

6. Computer Vision

Computer vision enables machines to interpret visual information. Traditionally, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) dominated this field, excelling at tasks like image classification, object detection, and segmentation.

But now, transformers and multimodal models extend these abilities further. By combining image encoders with text embeddings, models can understand and generate across modalities — describing images in natural language or generating images from text.

7. Agentic AI: The Next Stage

Agentic AI systems can not only process information but take autonomous actions, chaining multiple models and tools together.

• Example: AI agents booking a flight, writing an itinerary, and syncing your calendar — without manual intervention.
• Built on strong ML, DL, and GenAI foundations.

Conclusion

Generative AI is redefining how we interact with technology, but the path here matters. Without grounding in ML, DL, NLP, and CV, it’s easy to misuse or overestimate GenAI.

Think of this journey as layers of a course:

• ML (prediction)
• DL (complex data handling)
• GenAI (creation)
• NLP, Speech, CV (specializations)
• Agentic AI (autonomy)
