BETTER DECISIONS. BIGGER PROFITS.

Your business could be growing. Your revenue could be soaring. And yet, you could be getting poorer.

Every business owner / entrepreneur starts with a vision.

It could be to build a great product, serve customers better, create jobs, solve a problem or build a business that will eventually become a legacy.

And in the early days, the focus is often on sales.

  • How do I get more customers?
  • How do I increase revenue?
  • How do I grow?

But as the business grows, the questions change.

These may appear to be sales, operational or strategic decisions.

But underneath almost every important business decision lies a financial decision.

And the quality of those decisions can determine whether growth translates into profitability, cash generation and sustainable value or simply into a bigger business with bigger problems.

Revenue is not the same as financial success.

Consider a business whose annual revenue grows from ₹5 crore to ₹8 crore.

Sounds like good news.

But what if the additional ₹3 crore of revenue comes with lower margins, higher inventory, longer customer credit and increased borrowing?

The business has grown.

But has it become financially stronger?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most important shifts an entrepreneur can make:

Move from asking,

“How much did we sell?”

to asking,

“How much value did we create, what did it cost us, and where did the cash go?”

Growth is exciting.

thought leadership 4.0Profitable, cash-generating growth is what makes it sustainable.

You don’t need a complicated financial model to start making better financial decisions.

Begin with three simple questions.

1. What value will this decision create?

Suppose you are considering buying a ₹20 lakh machine.

The first question shouldn’t be:

“Can I afford it?”

Instead ask:

  • What additional revenue can it generate?
  • What costs will it save?
  • How much additional working capital will it require?
  • How long will it take to recover the investment?
  • What happens if demand doesn’t grow as expected?
  • Is buying the machine better than leasing or outsourcing?

The same thinking applies to hiring, technology, marketing, expansion and entering a new market.

Don’t look only at the cost of a decision. Look at the return it is expected to create.

2. Where is the cash going?

Here is a question every entrepreneur should be able to answer:

“If my sales grow by ₹1 crore, how much additional cash will I need to support that growth?”

Because profit and cash are not the same thing.

Imagine you sell ₹1 crore worth of products but give your customer 90 days to pay, while your suppliers expect payment in 30 days.

You may have made a sale.

You may even have booked a profit.

But for those 60 days, your business is effectively funding the customer.

This is why a business can look healthy on its Profit & Loss statement and still experience a cash crunch.

Working capital gets trapped in your inventory as well as receivables, while payments to your employees, suppliers, lenders and the government continue to be due.

Revenue may fuel growth. Cash flow keeps the business moving.

3. What does the number tell?

Financial statements are not just documents prepared for accountants, auditors or statutory compliance.

They are a business dashboard.

Your Profit & Loss statement can tell you whether your business model is generating profit.

Your Balance Sheet can show you what the business owns, owes and where capital is tied up.

Your Cash Flow Statement can show whether the business is actually generating cash.

But the real insight comes from connecting the numbers.

Suppose revenue has increased by 25%, but profit has increased by only 5%.

Pause.

Ask why.

Have input costs increased?

Have discounts increased?

Have employee costs gone up?

Has the product mix changed?

Are some customers generating revenue but very little margin?

Numbers don’t make decisions. They help you make better decisions.

Put a financial lens on every major decision.

Here are some simple reflections you can use before making an important business decision:

  1. Purpose – Why are we making this decision?
  2. Impact – What will it do to revenue, costs, margins and cash?
  3. Risk – What could go wrong? Which assumptions are we making?
  4. Return – What financial or strategic return do we expect?
  5. Alternatives – Is there another way to achieve the same objective with less capital or risk?
  6. Review – Once implemented, did the decision deliver what we expected?

That last question is often forgotten.

Financial decision-making doesn’t end when the investment is approved.

It ends when you learn whether the decision actually delivered the intended outcome.

Don’t leave finance to your auditors, consultants, accountant, finance manager or your CFO.

There is an important distinction between doing finance and using finance to make decisions.

Your finance team may prepare the numbers.

But you decide:

  • which customers to pursue,
  • what prices to charge,
  • which products to grow,
  • where to invest,
  • how much to borrow,
  • whether to hire,
  • and where to deploy scarce resources.

That makes financial understanding a leadership capability, not merely a finance function.

You don’t have to become a finance expert.

But you do need to become financially informed enough to ask the right questions.

The questions that can change your business.

When entrepreneurs become more comfortable with financial numbers, the conversation changes.

Instead of simply asking:

How much revenue did we make?

Start asking:

  • Which customers are actually profitable?
  • What is driving our margins?
  • Why is working capital increasing?
  • If we grow 30%, can our cash flows support that growth?
  • Are we creating value or merely creating volume?

These are powerful questions because financial decision-making is ultimately not about numbers.

It is about choices.

And better-informed choices can lead to better allocation of capital, stronger cash flows, healthier margins and more sustainable growth.

Finance doesn’t have to be complicated.

This is also why I created an online course, “What The Finance”.

The idea behind the course is simple:

Finance Simplified. Business Amplified.

Built on the national bestselling book, “What The Finance”, this course helps business owners and leaders understand finance in a simple, practical, business-oriented way, especially when they need to use financial information to make better decisions. (link to the course – https://ssscoach.graphy.com/courses/What-The-Finance-6a474d240fb5f995208bd2ac )

Because financial literacy shouldn’t be about memorising complicated terminology or formulas.

It should be about being able to look at a number and ask:

“So what does this mean for my business and what should I do about it?”

That is when finance stops being a reporting function and becomes a business advantage.

So, the next time you are about to make an important business decision, pause.

Don’t ask only:

“Can we do it?”

Ask:

“Should we do it?”

Then look at the numbers.

Because the future of your business is shaped not only by the opportunities you pursue, but by the financial decisions you make along the way.

What financial decision are you making today that could significantly shape the profitability of your business tomorrow?
