The above-mentioned quotable quote pretty much sums up the state of affairs that we are in. AI adoption has intensified in all walks of life.  2023 will perhaps go down as the year of ChatGPT. Generative AI (Gen_AI) models led by ChatGPT and including Microsoft Co-pilot, Google Gemini, Llama, Whisper, and Claude, using Large Language Models (LLM), not only became pervasive but also impacted all sectors and endeavors of humankind. Over the last couple of years, we also realized that with growing AI adoption, stronger governance is vital to balance innovation with safeguards on accuracy, accountability, autonomy, bias, ethics, fairness, integrity, morality, privacy, safety, transparency, trust, and sustainability

Various challenges and misuse of AI that we encountered included bias, deep fakes, election interference using AI, copyright infringements, job losses, carbon emissions, misinformation, cyber-attacks, monopolistic practices, and low-quality content.  Biases could be algorithmic, gender, language, and political in nature. AI regulatory frameworks have come to the fore with all governments engaging in said efforts.  Governance of AI technologies has become essential for governments across the world. Over the last decade, 40+ countries have enacted 200+ AI and related legislations while over 90 countries have developed AI governance frameworks, which will eventually translate to legislation. This is a far cry from just one AI legislation in 2016.  These governmental efforts are complemented by supranational agencies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency of the United Nations (UN) & Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD). High-technology giants such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, and Apple are also shaping the discourse in terms of AI technologies and its impact.

As we stand today, AI governance, regulation, and policy are, at best, a work-in-progress worldwide.  Due to the rapid pace of evolution of the technology, a well-defined, comprehensive, and end-to-end AI policy framework remains a challenge. The wish list is that this AI governance framework should offer clarity and direction to all stakeholders, while remaining adaptable to the rapid evolution of technology. This investigation explores the various intergovernmental and supranational initiatives like GPAI, AI for Good, UNESCO AI, AI Impact summit, AI safety summit, and Bletchley declaration towards AI governance and regulation.

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) was launched in June 2020 by OECD subsuming earlier discussions on the topic by various nations as early as 2017. India was a founder member of this partnership along with EU and US.  This is a global coordination platform that brings together governments, academia, industry, and civil society to ensure AI is developed in a way that is human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy. Various working groups have been formed centered along various themes such as Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work, and Innovation & Commercialization. These efforts have been complemented by UNESCO as well as G20 & G7, who have factored the GPAI inputs and deliberated on AI in their respective summits and working group discussions.  The focus is on ethics, policy, and responsible AI and not legislation and there are multiple layers of meetings all year around in addition to a global GPAI summit. These policy recommendations are generally non-binding and feed into major summit agendas including recently-held AI impact summit in India.

AI for Good

AI for Good is a similar initiative of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with 40 UN sister agencies towards AI for society. This global- platform aims to identify practical applications of AI to advance the UN SDG and scale these solutions for global impact. These include AI applications in healthcare, education, disaster management, climate change and smart cities. An AI for Good global summit is conducted annually to add to the narrative to:

• Apply AI to real-world global problems
• Accelerate progress toward SDGs
• Promote ethical and inclusive AI
• Foster global collaboration

UNESCO AI framework

The UNESCO AI framework is another important global effort to guide ethical and human-centric AI development. From 2018, this has been in the works as an extension to UNESCO’s mandate to advance ethics of science and digital transformation. Adopted in November 2021 by 190+ countries, this framework sets standards for how AI should be designed, developed, and used responsibly. This is the first truly global AI ethics agreement focusing on the following areas:

• AI Governance & Regulation
• Data Governance
• Education & Skills
• Gender Equality
• Environmental Impact
• Ethical Impact Assessment

This serves as a reference and ethical guideline for national AI laws and policies and is complementary to GPAI and AI for Good, which focus on policy collaboration and application areas respectively. However, all of them are non-binding and part of a shared universe with multi-stakeholders such as government, UN agencies, Tech giants, civil society, and academia.  Simultaneously, various countries are also working on their own sets of AI governance frameworks and policy. Some of them like US have been following a market-driven Ai regulatory approach. On expected lines, China has a state-driven approach whereas the EU follows a rights-driven approach.

AI safety summit

The AI safety summit hosted by the United Kingdom for the first time in 2023 was a landmark event with respect to regulation of AI. The main objective of the summit was to address the risks and safe development of advanced AI systems, especially frontier models like generative AI in the larger context of AI governance. The policy recommendation and deliberations of complementary initiatives such as GPAI, AI for Good and UNESCO AI were feeders to this major global summit. At this summit, most advanced nations such as US, UK, China, India, and the EU more or less agreed towards a road map, which is defined in Bletchley Declaration, a global agreement by national governments towards regulation and human oversight of AI. Signed by 28 nations, this Bletchley Declaration affirms that AI should be designed, developed, deployed, and used in a manner that is safe, human-centric, trustworthy and responsible. A subsequent AI safety summit in Seoul in May 2024 and AI action summit in Paris in February 2025 reaffirmed these concerns. The Seoul summit advocated the establishment of multi-stakeholder safety institutes and testing frameworks to address concerns with respect to AI governance. The Paris summit saw 100 countries participate and sign the declaration on promotion of inclusive and sustainable AI. This summit focused on global coordination, policy alignment, inclusive governance, and balancing innovation with regulation.

Some of the guiding commitments of the Bletchley declaration are as follows:

• Shared understanding of AI risks including General-purpose AImodels also called Frontier of AI especially in areas such as biotechnology, cyber security applications and misinformation.
• International cooperation on AI safety research, standards and policies
• Risk mitigation and safety frameworks
• Scientific and evidence-based policies across countries to ensure safety while recognizing that approaches may differ based on national circumstances and applicable legal frameworks.

AI Impact Summit 2026

The AI Impact Summit refers to a set of international forums focused on the real-world impact of AI, especially its economic, societal, and developmental consequences.  How AI affects economies, jobs, governance, and society, and how to maximize benefits while minimizing risks……

 The first AI Impact Summit 2026 hosted by India, marked a significant milestone in global AI dialogue, especially as one of the first large-scale AI summits held in the global south. This summit saw participation from 100+ countries and 20+ international organizations as well as the major tech giants in the AI space. This included foundation model companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind), big tech platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), infrastructure leaders (NVIDIA) and emerging ecosystem players (Indian startups working on sovereign AI and home-grown LLMs).  At the AI Impact Summit 2026, the “7 Chakras framework” was used as a conceptual model to organize discussions and actionable policy directions around AI. These chakras represent key pillars of AI development and impact as follows:

• Human capital
• Inclusion
• Innovation
• Governance
• Safety & Trust
• Economic development
• Sustainability

While realizing that AI is a growth engine for economic transformation, this framework and summit provided a structured roadmap for countries to develop AI ecosystems while balancing innovation, inclusion, and safety. Other outcomes included a strong push for inclusive AI with enhanced access for developing nations in the global south, focus on digital infrastructure for public good, enhanced global and multistakeholder collaboration and workforce transformation.

India’s Approach in AI Governance

India is no doubt emerging as a global leader in AI governance and regulation. India’s approach has been pragmatic and non-aggressive as also veering towards combining innovation, inclusion, and ethical oversight without the risk of overregulation. It is a middle path akin to our non-alignment approach in geopolitics. Distinctly stakeholder-centric as opposed to state-focused approach of China or strict rights approach like Europe or market-focused like USA.  India has been an active participant of various intergovernmental and supranational forums engaged in AI regulation and governance from their inception. India chaired the GPAI in 2024 and hosted the 2023 edition of the GPAI summit at New Delhi.

The successful conduct of the AI Impact Summit 2026 reaffirms India arriving at the high table of AI governance and regulation. Of course, there remains a lot to be done. An overarching, binding and comprehensive AI act under the ambit of the Digital India act is needed which subsumes multiple laws such as Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; IT Rules, 2021 (platform accountability), sectoral frameworks, and AI governance guidelines.

History shows that any new human-replacement tech is bound to suffer massive initial setbacks as humans always feared being replaced by something far more efficient and dependable, and also a human-creation which always succeeds, eventually!

(They must have even detested those creative / inventive humans, as suicidal or self-defeating ?)

Sabotage by affected parties?

Humans first resorted to sabotage of such tech / inventions, as in the case of the Sewing Machine, the first few prototypes of which were totally destroyed by smashing them onto the streets, by the protesting Seamstresses and their supporters.

Even those earliest prototypes, built by the inventor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, were so superior, they stitched with seams (joints or stitches) stronger than the basic cloth. No wonder the seamstresses feared loss of job! They were faster too!

The Teleprinter

Then there were skillful, agile Morse Decoding operators at telegraph offices. Only to be replaced by Telex or Teleprinter (invention of Reichspost ) which directly printed the (German / English) text on to a paper issuing out of a paper roll.

We could see, in WW II movies, these early adaptations of the Typewriter machines fitted with electromechanical solenoid-like add-ons operating the typewriter keys, then known as “Teletyping”. The intelligent and ultra-fast Morse Code technicians all got replaced en masse?

Telex itself was replaced by Fax (Facsimile) machine which just transmitted the handwritten, even signed (signature-added) message, not having to dictate and manually type a message as typewriter keys inputs.

Farm mechanization

Harry Ferguson invented the land tilling / ploughing tractor and demonstrated it in the UN Assembly, as a tool to feed the millions of hungry human beings of the world, by speeding up the crop farming process. Sowing, Reaping machines, combine-harvesters followed suit.(Massey Ferguson, the collaborators of TAFE – Tractors And Farm Equipments Ltd., Chennai, India are an offshoot of this inventor-company). So, mechanization of non-intelligent, skilled labour might have been relatively easier, compared to AI.

Computers Vs Humans

When computers came, lots of clerks and qualified, experienced employees felt their worst enemy has come. Long back, at ISI (Indian Statistical Institute), Kolkata there were massive demonstrations against the IBM computer that was just arriving. That IBM Mainframe was perhaps one of the first 3 computers to be imported into India.

AI making inroads despite initial hiccups

Self-Repairing and Self-Replicating robots have already made inroads as early as the 2010s.

An MNC GCC (Global Capability Center) in India is considering , within a year, a cadre reduction of junior staff from 495 to 5 with AI adoption.

16,000 employees replaced by AI at Amazon. Menial jobs at Logistics positions in their Warehouse too are being replaced by dexterous robots. It can get more ruthless. Brace yourself.

A Tesla autonomous car, couple of years back in the USA, fatally crashed into a crossing truck at an intersection as the colour of the truck was similar to the background evening sky. Such errors are far fewer in between now as AI is fast improving.

So, AI in its present form of either Alpha or Beta version may suffer setbacks but ultimately replace “huge swathes” of skillful / expert humans. It is a fact. It may be only a matter of time?

Thank the inventor-folks — if you are an AI hater — releasing untested or unfixed (of bugs) versions hastily into the market only to face market backfire!

Thus the hopefuls of those sticking along in the job develop a false sense of superiority — even job security? — that they, being humans, can never be replaced. They are just sitting ducks.

But the Autonomous cars of today, for instance, are far more advanced. Equipped with NVIDIA high performance, high speed chips and MATLAB mathematical concepts, and myriad sensors, these cars can “see” and identify the road users (humans) and objects. The sensor-fusion LIDAR camera  can identify if it is a fog, or a bush, or is it a human being ahead of it in the road. Also, from the angle between the standing person’s legs, that is, if the legs are apart, the vehicle senses that the person ahead, on the sidewalk, may move in the path of the vehicle. The vehicle even verifies if the person / pedestrian has seen the vehicle approaching or not. If he or she is unaware of the vehicle approaching, the vehicle is even more cautious, ever ready to apply the brakes. If a ball comes rolling across the road ahead, the AI of the car even expects a child chasing or following the ball. This tech is known as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Such ADAS incorporates TCS (Traction Control System), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) which integrates suspension, steering and braking systems and many others as one cohesive system to make the modern day car nearly like a living being (a 4-legged, agile animal) with locomotion – and almost as sure-footed as a mountain-goat!

Recently, it was reported that the AI-enabled surgical robots were making mistakes due to the robot wrongly identifying some human anatomical zones / organs. But, the experts are exhorting that a mixed approach of human experts (surgeons) assisting the AI-enabled robots will be more practical, till the dependability of AI improves.

Samsung which invented the internet-enabled Refrigerator around the year 1997 is now marketing AI-enabled Fridges which suggest a cooking recipe based on the fridge contents. The rice-and-dried-fish-to-electronics-chips giant is tasting success after success.

Aspiring Post Graduate Students are banking on Chat GPT/Gemini for the SOP (Statement Of Purpose) for admission into elite universities of USA. It will be only a matter of time before they find out what the selecting Professor likes in a prospect student and infuse those into the Report. Such AI tools are triumphantly used by students for the Project Work, doctoral thesis also.

The likely Forerunners of AI

 In the late 1970s, Alfred Teves GmbH of Germany, (now Conti tech), developed car Disc Brakes with Disc wear (Dashboard) indicators which are just an electric circuit-completing terminal embedded into each Brake Pad. Then the Brake Fluid level indicators of the Fluid Reservoirs followed. For dual brakes, there was a  tiny piston, in parallel, which was balanced by equal fluid pressure on both ends and the loss of pressure by brake fluid leak of any one brake circuit will push this piston to activate a micro-switch for Dashboard Alert. This warned the driver of the partial brake failure and that the stopping distance will be nearly double. Such primitive pure electro-mechanical sensing devices in-built into mechanical assemblies might have inspired the embedded systems which came later. These have morphed into advanced sensors and actuators of today.

Bertram Raphael of SRI (Stanford Research Institute), Author of the book, The Thinking Computer, used to research on AI Robots and Machine Vision as far back as 1968.

Why the successful  advent of AI is certain?

 There are now scientific ways to accurately capture, collate the knowledge of thousands of experts, like lawyers, brain or kidney, or heart surgeons, and organize them in an orderly fashion for assimilation by machines / artificial systems for designing the algorithms.

Statistics and Probability Sciences, high speed Processors, advanced Reliability Testing
methods and entrepreneurs willing to invest in these abound. Aided by cash-rich corporations which suffer at the hands of unionised highly skilled labour, AI sweep is now imminent with the advent of advancements of Data Sciences.

First it was Parallel Processing of Supercomputers, then High Speed Processing, then High Performance Computing but now it is Quantum Computing using Cloud.

According to a Readers’ Digest article, the more diverse or varied are the subjects a human brain holds, the more creative and imaginative the brain becomes. But, even the most advanced brain is not as good as an artificial chip which can capture the intelligence of thousands of Subject Matter (Domain) Experts as an AI System.

We have seen Cyborgs, Sci-Fi Terminator movies, and now, even the brain thought process has been mapped.  Ethical questions apart, AI is certainly the future. The extreme electric power and cooling water thirst of AI Supercomputers will also need to be addressed by the society.

Biomimicry

Right from the bats which inspired the RADAR and SONAR and the honeybees which made men invent the DuPont Nomex honeycomb panels of Aircrafts and Satellites, Nature has been inspiring (non-materialistic) Intelligence also. Thank God, they don’t sue us for Copyright Infringement!

Did we say, we can gather the knowledge of thousands of experts? We were wrong! We should have said that not only thousands of human experts but also from Mother Nature. That is, from all living creatures, and also non-living matter — their survival tactics, behaviours, communication and reproduction methods, self-preservation strategies,  proliferation, extreme tenacity, thriving in adverse conditions — like the strange organism / bacteria which survives on nuclear reactor cores, how they mitigate risks, etc. Man has to just look at Nature for exceptional, effective solutions for his managerial, financial, family, engineering, emotional problems. The solutions for millions of problems of humankind are already staring at man, from Nature. Already analogies among Nature, Universe, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering can be seen and studied / compared against each other.

Quest for excellence – a Triumph of Life?

The more are the failures encountered by AI experts, the more determined they are driven to perfect and excel in their outputs. Be it heavier-than-air flight, Space Research, vaccines, or Defence Tech, the humans thrive on challenges.

Human civilization always stands on the shoulders of the discoveries, inventions, patents and the ensuing advancements of the (primitive) previous generations, to reach for the sky and the capabilities and potential of the culmination of the diverse knowledge domains of today — which reinforce each other exponentially in effect, and their myriad combinations are infinite.

Already there’s a massive chips shortage, experienced in the automotive, home appliances sectors, driven by the surge in AI Systems demands.

Those who are adamant in not unlearning their outdated knowledge and unwilling to adapt to the changing times – by re skilling / Up Skilling – will be the losers?

Cybersecurity has moved beyond the IT department

For years, organizations treated security as a backend concern. Firewalls, encryption, access controls, important, but invisible. Design lived elsewhere. UX was about ease. UI was about appearance.

That separation no longer works.

Phishing works by exploiting uncertainty. Attackers depend on users being unable to quickly tell what’s real.

Clean, consistent UI makes that difficult.

When real interfaces follow strict visual and behavioral rules, colors, typography, spacing, tone, users develop intuition. Anything that breaks the pattern feels wrong.

Consistency trains users what to trust. Inconsistency trains them to ignore warning signs.

Its true – Organizations should outlive, if not preferably outpace, the People – who start, build,& sustain it and sometimes unsustain it as well. This article is a result of continuous interactions with Leaders, their Organizations and others across 4 decades – Both Family Managed and Corporates, real & felt. As a Professional groomed to be an Intrapreneur since early days, up bringing has been a kind of Classical in the sense of mixing the Flavours of both Corporate and Family Business Styles & Culture, thanks to Business Owners and Superiors.

A firm believer in Observational Learning, having had much larger Customers and Suppliers, Learning has been tremendous over the Years – both Good & Otherwise. Many a times I have had the opportunity to look at both what should be and what should not be. Sustaining the success of Organizations across dynamic business scenarios, I firmly attribute to the resilience of the Top Management – their agility and ability to think differently and most importantly being appropriately Decisive.

Professionally or Owner Managed

Bitten by the Entrepreneurial bug, I decided to Superannuate on time. This decision was kind of influenced by my observations about lack of appreciable difference between a Professionally & Owner Managed Organization. It is also a decision based on What one should not do – Extensions. Many times I hear people remarking that “Owners cannot retire” as much as “Professionals don’t want to retire”. Though this appears to be dependent on Personal Priorities and Pre-occupations, I have observed that this is something to do with Self-confidence, ability to live beyond the Organization, the Trust they have on their second and third line irrespective of a Fellow Professional or a Family Member, and most importantly their own vulnerabilities post dis-engagement.

The Process

There is a need for me to make some submissions here – I have had the opportunity to get trained the Swiss Way, adopt the Japanese Way and live a Consumer life American Way. This being said, I believe in looking at every aspect of Managing or Mismanaging a Business as a Process. And Transition planning is one such critical Process.

Organization Design

Looking at Transition Planning as a Process, it starts with the very organizational design.
Trajectory of evolution of an Organization, though cannot be predicted accurately, need to be atleast visualized. Else may give way to either under and over staffed scenarios. I have personally preferred understaffed scenarios as a strategy until the Organization really Grows – for two reasons. Firstly, it prepares Employees for additional responsibilities and secondly, it cushions the Organization against adverse impacts. Given the different possibilities, an Organization Design should accommodate for both Growth and Stable phase. Opportunity to Grow Vertically in an Organization will depend on the Employee willing to take additional responsibilities.

Time Lapse & Promotions

Structured and Stream Lined promoting of Employees is certainly a way of Transition Planning. There are a few precautions though, which are pertinent – Promotion should be only for additional, well differentiable Role & Responsibilities. This should certainly be not based on time lapse, age & experience. It should also be reckoned that, as Employees Grow higher up in Hierarchy, Opportunities will become rarer. Promotion should also be not based on either output increase or sales revenue increase. This simply means, Promotion for the sake of Promotion and based on Year on Year increase in sales should be avoided.

Letting Go

Sometime earlier I have written an exclusive article on Letting Go as a Business strategy drawing parallel to Successful Batting in Cricket. Shall confine this time Letting Go from the perspective of Organizational Transition. Real Transitional Growth happens within an Organization and for the People in it, only when the incumbents are willing to Delegate and let go of their Authority and Control. This is true both for Grooming Next Gen Employees and Family Members. Leaders often ignore the fact that Controlling & Monitoring are very very different. Likewise, at some stage Organization may exhaust options to promote even Deserving Employees. This is the time when we should let go of such Good Employees – both for Organization & Employee sake. This is simply to avoid complicating the Organization structure. There are many successful companies/ organizations wherein the original promoters have relinquished their Ownership for the larger good of the Organization.

Succession Planning

Having been a witness to many dilemmas, both within and outside Organizations, succession planning is invariably biased. A lot of emphasis is given to Loyalty than that of Efficacy, however rigid and objective the evaluation process may be. Despite this, its important succession planning is built into the Organizational Planning Process. A good plan should include creating opportunities (vacancies) at regular intervals and letting go people, authority and control at regular intervals. A Leader is only good as much as he is willing to relinquish his own Role & Responsibilities. It is also a fact that only such Leaders can ensure Leadership pipeline. This is true both for Owners & Professionals, and should be seen only from that of Organizational Perspective and never from that of a Family or Loyalty.

Goals, Objectives & Measurements

Any Transition and Succession planning will not be complete without insistence of Metrics.
Mutual transparency about Expectations, Goals & Objectives is essential. Periodic review and reassessments will then determine the readiness of both the individual and the organization. Both for Professional and Family such measurements should be Professional and in its Truest Sense for the Organization to be successfully sustainable.

QUALITY the most understood, and widely mis-understood, rather mis-construed in Human World, the very purpose for which Businesses exist. Challenges emerge as QUALITY – means the Quest for Ultimate for Stake Holders in the Consumption Value Chain.

In my almost 4 decades of Experience, and as a Mentor, across industries, products and services, could not either get satisfied or satisfy customers, both internal and external, in terms of product or services Quality. I have also found that it is not east to DEFINE QUALITY.

Many concepts have emerged. The race in every such concept is to attract, occupy Human Mind and gain its belief – from Seller to User. In Management parlance, this means – Positioning and/or USP (Unique Selling Proposition). As a Gen-X Professional, have seen transformative shifts in Buying Behavior – mostly induced by Growth in Consumerism alongside proliferation of Global Brands and their look-alikes. Yes, we are spoilt for choices.

STP – Segment, Target & Position is a very rational exercise used by strategic marketers leveraging Demographic Dividend to Position the products according to the so called Buying Preferences. While I agree with STP approach as the best available option, have learnt in a hard-way that this has to be adopted to different Region based Socio-Cultural aspirations. It is just there is no “One Shoes Fit All” strategy!

QUALITY– Over the Years, as a big fan of Six Sigma Philosophy, I have always believed Process Quality is the Most Vital for delivering Consistent Product and/ Or Services Quality. A robust process is sure to eliminate Human induced variances, control of which remains more a Desire than Possibility. Therefore Resources Quality – Infrastructure & People becomes critical, coupled with Commitment to Systems & Procedures, meaning Discipline.

MEASUREMENTS – What, How and When of Measurement forms essential part of Managing Quality. First and foremost is to ensure that Products or Services are as per the desired level or specifications at the Point of Sale by the Seller or Services Provider. Though mostly internal to the Organization, if the deliverables match the specifications – 50% of the Bridge is successfully crossed. Wish to re-iterate – its only 50%!

DEFINING QUALITY–Both as a Buyer & Seller, have always tried to emphasize that Quality is relative – dependent primarily on the Cost and then on the Price. While cost is a fact, Price is yet again relative – Right Price is always a Belief. As a Seller, Quality is completely based on STP, though with risks it carries. Many of us as Sellers believe “Right Product for the Right Price”.

As for the User, Price actually is a Cost and therefore looks at it for the Value it offers. Of course this has evolved over decades – from that of Sellers to Buyers’ Market. USP gave way to UVP (Unique Value Proposition), reinforcing that Quality is Relative, more than ever. Its all about User Perception now – expect maximum Benefit to Cost Ratio. If Cost of Quality is to be reckoned as part of Products or Services Pricing, then Cost is all-inclusive – Ease of Purchase and Availability, End to End, and just not the Price.

In the recent times, wherein Brand Loyalty is Fractional and PLCs (Product Life Cycles) are Diminishing, QUALITY has evolved from Mass to Class to Individualistic, paving way for Super Segmentation and Mass Customization. This simply means Society, that is the Market, is moving up in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, redefining the Perception towards Quality. 

QUALITY today is no more a Choice – It is given and is the most important part of Mind Games in Selling & Buying.

The company has a production plant in El Prat de Llobregat, and its Bitrack robot has been successfully tested in urological surgeries. It is currently in the process of expanding its surgical indications.

RobSurgical designs, develops, and markets a surgical robot that improves efficiency and usability in the operating room and enables hybrid surgeries, combining MIS (minimally invasive surgery) and MIRS (minimally invasive robotic surgery) techniques in a single procedure. The system is designed to be portable, flexible, and quick to install, facilitating its adoption in small and medium-sized hospitals and expanding access to robotic surgery.

Have become an avid anlayser of History of Businesses, as part of my recent Professional Engagement of evaluating Companies. Its intriguing to see different styles of the Business Managers, probably defined by their personalities and personal experiences. I repeat, irrespective of Size and Stature, its clear that a Leader’s Decision (Entrepreneur or Professional) is completely dependent on his experience. Once bitten, twice shy types mostly. This is probably from where Resistance to Change also emulates.

In Business & in Real Life, there are two approaches – Outside-In and Inside-Out..

Typical Entrepreneurs, Professionals and Leaders believe in Outside-In as the best approach – laying emphasis on SPELT (Social Political Economic Legal & Technological Environment, summed up in SWOT Analysis) based decisions. Which is quite logical …which also follows Porters Principles of Five Forces.

However in my view, true Innovators and Disruptors believe in Inside-Out approach. It typically envisions a scenario which believes the Market and Society (which is essentially the Market) at large may not know what they want. This in Management Jargon is referred to as Concept Selling & Creativity. I always vouch for this approach.

While the first approach is believed to understand and mitigate risks, in the second approach, risk is the essence and hence returns are disproportionately high as a reward for the high stakes. Ofcourse, failures will always be there…it takes confidence and courage to take the second approach. World over, its a proven fact that, successes even if it is around 10% (meaning as high as 90% failures), will more than Compensate and Contribute to Growth & Profitability. This approach is what brings Leap Frog Growth rather than market dependent incremental growth as in the first approach.

For the first approach, Competitiveness, Consistency and Efficiencies should be at their best to sustain success. Whereas, by nature, the second approach inbuilds inefficiency and thrives only on newness and market attractiveness – mostly due to the First Mover advantage.

In my assessment, for first one, good examples shall be Lee Iacocca… for the second i would rate Akio Marita, Steve Jobs and more recently, Elon Musk. Google, Microsoft, Intel, N-Vidia – off late i believe have lost out on their abilities to be creative – may be due market pressures and share holder expectations, these always being the limiting factors
especially when businesses are investor driven, which in the recent years are too many.

In Indian context, i place L&T, Jindals, Tatas in first category. Though many may not agree, I place Mukesh Ambani, Damanias and Adanis in the second category.

Drawing parallel to our personal lives, many try to evaluate others (Outside – In approach) , rather than trusting themselves (Inside – Out approach). In the process we become judgmental, either consciously or otherwise. Though colloquial, easiest examples could Indian Arranged Marriages as an example for the First Approach and Love Marriages for the second approach.

Irrespective of the approaches, which mostly is associated with Personality, ability to recognise that going is not right and take course correction at that instant is what ensures sustainable success. Then its all about timing – a withdrawal or an exit strategy.

I came across the beauty Raminator Monster Truck at the Oklahoma City Fair. From a distance, it appeared like a movie prop. Then I heard the growl as it started, and then the roar when it revved up. The ground trembled, leaves fell from the trees, water puddles vibrated, and we were in awe at the height of automotive tech advances.

What is the Raminator?

The Raminator is a custom monster truck built by Tam and Mark Hall of Hall Bros Racing, Thomasboro, Illinois. The model is one of the series of trucks made by Hall Bros. The series includes Heavy Metal (1986), Big Boss (1992), and Executioner (1992), all done in collaboration with GMC and Chevrolet. In 2002, Dodge offered sponsorship to build the Raminator.

The Raminator has consistently won awards USHRA, Monster Jam, ProMT, PENDA series championship, Monster Nationals, Driver of the Year, and many more. Later, Dodge withdrew the sponsorship since it wanted to focus on smaller trucks. As of now, Hall Bros manages the Raminator.

What are specifications of the Raminator?

Monster trucks are huge, and the Raminator is one of the hugest. Table 1 gives specifications of the Raminator.

The biggest monster truck is Big Foot, used mainly for shows, crushing other vehicles. However, the Raminator gets the attention due to its wins, aura, top speed, and power. Recently, Guiness Book of Records certified that on a test track, Raminator reached a top speed of 99.1 mph, making it the fastest monster truck.

The Design of a Monster Truck is complex since the behemoth needs to have speed, handling, and power. Some important components of the truck are reviewed.

Hemi Engine

Raminator has a hemi engine, and this is a V8, supercharged, custom engine from Chevrolet rebuilt by Mopar. The combustion chamber is designed in the form of a hemisphere to increase the efficiency and power. They may be built as V8 or even V12 configurations. Chevrolet, Noonan, Shafiroff, Kaase Racing, Proline Engines, and Brad Anderson build these engines.

The hemispherical or dome-shaped combustion chamber inside the cylinder head has the sparkplug in the center of the chamber. This placement decreases the burn distance and flame travel of the fuel-air mix, leading to improved combustion. Over the century since it was developed in 1901, leading firms have used the engine as a base.

Firms such as Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Daimler, Riley, Corvette, Ford flathead V8, Jaguar XK, Chrysler C 300, Lancia, Dodge Coronet, Plymouth Belvedere, Dodge Charger, and Plymouth Satellite, and others have used the model. The engine was discontinued in street cars due to disadvantages such as higher costs, heavier weight, ability to fit only two valves per head.

Tubular Chassis

Raminator and other monster trucks have a tube steel frame. The tubes are made from steel grades of ASTM A1020 DOM, 4130 Chromium-Molybdenum Steel. The metallurgical properties of these steels make them ideal for the high impact loads, shear stress that the frame undergoes.

For the chassis, the designer used two tubes, with the smaller sliding into the bigger to provide additional strength, especially at joints. A monster truck that performs stunt jumps over bumps, other vehicles at shows, and jumps more than 30 feet. The velocity at launch would be 40+ mph, glides at 32+ mph, and comes down at 44+ mph. So, a truck of 10,000 lbs would land with an 8-g, 25,000 pounds, and the chassis must be strong, light, and flexible.

1020 DOM or drawn over mandrel steel is cold drawing that allows maintaining close tolerance, a smooth finish, and a consistent wall thickness. The steel has a composition of Carbon 0.17 to 0.23 percent, Iron at 99.53 percent, Manganese at 0.6 percent, Phosphorus of 0.04 percent, and Sulphur of 0.05 percent.

The composition gives the steel and tensile strength of 602 Mega Pascal, yield strength of 512 Mega Pascal, Elongation of 15 percent, and 90 Brinell hardness. The four Link bars that connect to the suspension are made of 4130 chromium-molybdenum tubes. Overall, the whole frame is light and can take the massive loads.

Shock absorbers

The load on a monster truck when it drives, jumps, and corners is borne by the shock absorbers. The shock absorbers and suspension need at least 28 inches of travel. This travel is about four times that of the leaf-springs. The shock absorbers have a three-inch outer diameter steel tube with a quarter-inch wall thickness hydraulic wall tube.

The outer surface has a finned or ribbed construction to remove the intense heat. The tubes have Nitrogen gas at 400 psi and under compression; the internal pressure is 2100 psi, to prevent tube collapse. The N gas compresses when the truck hits a ramp, and then springs back, adding to the height to which the truck flies.

Gear Train, transmission, and axle

The gear train is automatic, with reverse rotation, Transfer Case Sniper Gear box with FTI performance, 1.00 Bull Gear Ratio. The final dive ratio of 0.50 to 1.70. Captive seals are provided to prevent mud from entering. Other types are Powerglide, Turbo 400, TorqueFLite 727, or the Ford C6 transmission.

The axle is of ZF make, and the total reduction provided is 16.5:1, planetary reduction of 6.3:1, and the ring and pinion or rear end has a 2.6:1 reduction. The large reduction allows the members, such as drive shafts, ring and pinion, and axles, to bear less stress.

The Weight distribution ratio of the sprung and unsprung weights is important. Sprung weight is the load on the suspension, and the unsprung load is that which does not rest on the suspension. Unlike passenger cars that have a 95% ratio, monster trucks have a 50:50 ratio. This distribution allows the maximum weight on the wheel and so the truck remains on the ground.

Tires

BKT, Firestone, and other brands make monster truck tires. These are just huge, about 66 by 43 by 25 in, weighing more than 440 lbs at 1.6 bar pressure. While such tires require large and heavy rims, the weight will be very high. Therefore, the rims are made of 25-inch tubes. During a jump, when the vehicle lands, the tires almost flatten, without crushing the rim.

A bigger bead on the wheel is fabricated from the tube. The width of the rim is kept at 32 inches, and a crown is built. Stock tires are modified by turning on a lathe, and three inches of tread is removed. The remaining lugs are shaved by hand, and about 450 lbs of rubber is removed. The reason is weight, and when 10 Lbs is removed from the tire, about 100 lbs is reduced from the chassis, increasing the speed.

Seating

The seat is critical, since an improperly designed seat will tear loose and send the driver flying. The seat is layered with high-impact foam to reduce shocks, and a 7-point harness keeps the driver seated. It is bolted to the chassis and reduces the 15 g decelerations to about 4.5 g to the driver. This flying and dropping happens 25-40 times in a circuit.

Final Thoughts

At the OKC fair, the pit crew was kind enough to give me a short ride. It was a plain track in a field, but it felt like riding an angry but controlled elephant. A small ‘bump’ was built on which the truck rode, and it felt like I was dropping from the sky, with the ground swimming and wavering.

I have seen many mean and powerful racing cars, even touched a few; they were awesome. With the Raminator, it felt like touching a resting bull that would rise and rage. A thought struck me, if the truck decided to run wild, there was nothing in the city that could stop it.
