The above-mentioned quotable quote pretty much sums up the state of affairs that we are in. AI adoption has intensified in all walks of life.  2023 will perhaps go down as the year of ChatGPT. Generative AI (Gen_AI) models led by ChatGPT and including Microsoft Co-pilot, Google Gemini, Llama, Whisper, and Claude, using Large Language Models (LLM), not only became pervasive but also impacted all sectors and endeavors of humankind. Over the last couple of years, we also realized that with growing AI adoption, stronger governance is vital to balance innovation with safeguards on accuracy, accountability, autonomy, bias, ethics, fairness, integrity, morality, privacy, safety, transparency, trust, and sustainability

Various challenges and misuse of AI that we encountered included bias, deep fakes, election interference using AI, copyright infringements, job losses, carbon emissions, misinformation, cyber-attacks, monopolistic practices, and low-quality content.  Biases could be algorithmic, gender, language, and political in nature. AI regulatory frameworks have come to the fore with all governments engaging in said efforts.  Governance of AI technologies has become essential for governments across the world. Over the last decade, 40+ countries have enacted 200+ AI and related legislations while over 90 countries have developed AI governance frameworks, which will eventually translate to legislation. This is a far cry from just one AI legislation in 2016.  These governmental efforts are complemented by supranational agencies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency of the United Nations (UN) & Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD). High-technology giants such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, and Apple are also shaping the discourse in terms of AI technologies and its impact.

As we stand today, AI governance, regulation, and policy are, at best, a work-in-progress worldwide.  Due to the rapid pace of evolution of the technology, a well-defined, comprehensive, and end-to-end AI policy framework remains a challenge. The wish list is that this AI governance framework should offer clarity and direction to all stakeholders, while remaining adaptable to the rapid evolution of technology. This investigation explores the various intergovernmental and supranational initiatives like GPAI, AI for Good, UNESCO AI, AI Impact summit, AI safety summit, and Bletchley declaration towards AI governance and regulation.

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) was launched in June 2020 by OECD subsuming earlier discussions on the topic by various nations as early as 2017. India was a founder member of this partnership along with EU and US.  This is a global coordination platform that brings together governments, academia, industry, and civil society to ensure AI is developed in a way that is human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy. Various working groups have been formed centered along various themes such as Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work, and Innovation & Commercialization. These efforts have been complemented by UNESCO as well as G20 & G7, who have factored the GPAI inputs and deliberated on AI in their respective summits and working group discussions.  The focus is on ethics, policy, and responsible AI and not legislation and there are multiple layers of meetings all year around in addition to a global GPAI summit. These policy recommendations are generally non-binding and feed into major summit agendas including recently-held AI impact summit in India.

AI for Good

AI for Good is a similar initiative of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with 40 UN sister agencies towards AI for society. This global- platform aims to identify practical applications of AI to advance the UN SDG and scale these solutions for global impact. These include AI applications in healthcare, education, disaster management, climate change and smart cities. An AI for Good global summit is conducted annually to add to the narrative to:

• Apply AI to real-world global problems
• Accelerate progress toward SDGs
• Promote ethical and inclusive AI
• Foster global collaboration

UNESCO AI framework

The UNESCO AI framework is another important global effort to guide ethical and human-centric AI development. From 2018, this has been in the works as an extension to UNESCO’s mandate to advance ethics of science and digital transformation. Adopted in November 2021 by 190+ countries, this framework sets standards for how AI should be designed, developed, and used responsibly. This is the first truly global AI ethics agreement focusing on the following areas:

• AI Governance & Regulation
• Data Governance
• Education & Skills
• Gender Equality
• Environmental Impact
• Ethical Impact Assessment

This serves as a reference and ethical guideline for national AI laws and policies and is complementary to GPAI and AI for Good, which focus on policy collaboration and application areas respectively. However, all of them are non-binding and part of a shared universe with multi-stakeholders such as government, UN agencies, Tech giants, civil society, and academia.  Simultaneously, various countries are also working on their own sets of AI governance frameworks and policy. Some of them like US have been following a market-driven Ai regulatory approach. On expected lines, China has a state-driven approach whereas the EU follows a rights-driven approach.

AI safety summit

The AI safety summit hosted by the United Kingdom for the first time in 2023 was a landmark event with respect to regulation of AI. The main objective of the summit was to address the risks and safe development of advanced AI systems, especially frontier models like generative AI in the larger context of AI governance. The policy recommendation and deliberations of complementary initiatives such as GPAI, AI for Good and UNESCO AI were feeders to this major global summit. At this summit, most advanced nations such as US, UK, China, India, and the EU more or less agreed towards a road map, which is defined in Bletchley Declaration, a global agreement by national governments towards regulation and human oversight of AI. Signed by 28 nations, this Bletchley Declaration affirms that AI should be designed, developed, deployed, and used in a manner that is safe, human-centric, trustworthy and responsible. A subsequent AI safety summit in Seoul in May 2024 and AI action summit in Paris in February 2025 reaffirmed these concerns. The Seoul summit advocated the establishment of multi-stakeholder safety institutes and testing frameworks to address concerns with respect to AI governance. The Paris summit saw 100 countries participate and sign the declaration on promotion of inclusive and sustainable AI. This summit focused on global coordination, policy alignment, inclusive governance, and balancing innovation with regulation.

Some of the guiding commitments of the Bletchley declaration are as follows:

• Shared understanding of AI risks including General-purpose AImodels also called Frontier of AI especially in areas such as biotechnology, cyber security applications and misinformation.
• International cooperation on AI safety research, standards and policies
• Risk mitigation and safety frameworks
• Scientific and evidence-based policies across countries to ensure safety while recognizing that approaches may differ based on national circumstances and applicable legal frameworks.

AI Impact Summit 2026

The AI Impact Summit refers to a set of international forums focused on the real-world impact of AI, especially its economic, societal, and developmental consequences.  How AI affects economies, jobs, governance, and society, and how to maximize benefits while minimizing risks……

 The first AI Impact Summit 2026 hosted by India, marked a significant milestone in global AI dialogue, especially as one of the first large-scale AI summits held in the global south. This summit saw participation from 100+ countries and 20+ international organizations as well as the major tech giants in the AI space. This included foundation model companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind), big tech platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), infrastructure leaders (NVIDIA) and emerging ecosystem players (Indian startups working on sovereign AI and home-grown LLMs).  At the AI Impact Summit 2026, the “7 Chakras framework” was used as a conceptual model to organize discussions and actionable policy directions around AI. These chakras represent key pillars of AI development and impact as follows:

• Human capital
• Inclusion
• Innovation
• Governance
• Safety & Trust
• Economic development
• Sustainability

While realizing that AI is a growth engine for economic transformation, this framework and summit provided a structured roadmap for countries to develop AI ecosystems while balancing innovation, inclusion, and safety. Other outcomes included a strong push for inclusive AI with enhanced access for developing nations in the global south, focus on digital infrastructure for public good, enhanced global and multistakeholder collaboration and workforce transformation.

India’s Approach in AI Governance

India is no doubt emerging as a global leader in AI governance and regulation. India’s approach has been pragmatic and non-aggressive as also veering towards combining innovation, inclusion, and ethical oversight without the risk of overregulation. It is a middle path akin to our non-alignment approach in geopolitics. Distinctly stakeholder-centric as opposed to state-focused approach of China or strict rights approach like Europe or market-focused like USA.  India has been an active participant of various intergovernmental and supranational forums engaged in AI regulation and governance from their inception. India chaired the GPAI in 2024 and hosted the 2023 edition of the GPAI summit at New Delhi.

The successful conduct of the AI Impact Summit 2026 reaffirms India arriving at the high table of AI governance and regulation. Of course, there remains a lot to be done. An overarching, binding and comprehensive AI act under the ambit of the Digital India act is needed which subsumes multiple laws such as Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; IT Rules, 2021 (platform accountability), sectoral frameworks, and AI governance guidelines.

She tackled the frustrations of sewing machines, inventing a lockstitch model that needed no bobbin. Her ideas came in bursts (like “popcorn popping,” she had once said), filling notebooks and, eventually, American homes and offices. By the 1930s, her inventions ranged from compact umbrellas to typewriters that made four copies at once, all designed to solve problems others had simply accepted.

Reporters dubbed her “Lady Edison,” a label that, while well-intentioned, missed the point. Edison had labs and teams; the only things Beulah had were imagination and grit. Rather than being content to see problems, Beulah reimagined solutions. Her vacuum ice cream freezer and bobbinless sewing machine were better than incremental improvements, for they were seen as leaps born from practical imagination. She asked, “What if we did it differently?” and then set out to build prototypes that proved it could be done.

In data analytics, the NEW principle may start off being about adopting the latest tools. But it soon progresses to rethinking the very problems we’re trying to solve. Too often, we focus on optimizing existing reports or models, rather than questioning whether those outputs are even necessary. Are we providing real-time insights when stakeholders need them, or just faster versions of yesterday’s reports? Are we designing data architectures around user workflows, or around technical convenience?

The most transformative analytics projects I’ve seen would seek to go beyond using new technology; they would redefine the problem. They asked “what if” questions that seemed impossible until someone, like Beulah, built a working prototype. For example, when business users struggled with data literacy, one team I worked with created interactive storyboards instead of static dashboards, making insights accessible to everyone, not just analysts.

The New principle invites us to be inventors, not just implementers. It’s about daring first to imagine, and then to build, solutions that eliminate friction entirely.

TRUE: Staying Authentic to Real Human Needs

Every one of Beulah’s inventions addressed a genuine, often unspoken, need. Her compact umbrellas fit into handbags because she understood how women navigated their days. Her typewriter innovations made office work more efficient because she had seen the bottlenecks firsthand.

The True principle is about staying grounded in authentic user needs. In analytics, technical brilliance is meaningless if it doesn’t improve real human experiences. I’ve seen machine learning models that dazzled data scientists but left business users confused. I’ve seen dashboards that delivered instant access to irrelevant information. The best analytics solutions are those that solve problems users actually feel; even if they can’t articulate them.

This means spending time with stakeholders, observing their workflows, listening to their stories, and identifying pain points that have become invisible through familiarity. It means designing tools that align with how people actually think and work, not how we wish they would.

The True principle reminds us that the ultimate goal of analytics is not just insight, but impact. Like Beulah, we must pay attention to the real lives behind the data, ensuring our solutions make a tangible difference.

Bringing It All Together: The Popcorn Legacy

Beulah Louise Henry’s ideas came like popcorn: sudden, rapid, unpredictable, unstoppable. She filled notebooks with sketches and calculations, always chasing the next solution to a problem which others had accepted as unsolvable. By the 1930s, her inventions were everywhere, yet her name faded into obscurity even as her creations became commonplace.

Her legacy is a call to action for all of us in the data world. We, too, are surrounded by scattered puzzle pieces (such as customer data, operational metrics, market signals, and the like) waiting for someone with Beulah’s curiosity to see the patterns, imagine new solutions, and stay true to the needs of real people.

Key Finding: Innovation in data analytics doesn’t require the latest technology or the fanciest credentials. It requires the courage to question, the imagination to invent, and the empathy to serve.

So, the next time you’re faced with a messy dataset or a stubborn business problem, remember Beulah Louise Henry. Sit with the broken pieces. Ask better questions. Build something new. And above all, stay true to the people you’re trying to help. Because sometimes, the most powerful ideas really do come like popcorn: sudden, surprising, and impossible to ignore.

The Gap Between Investment and Reality

Over the past few years, I’ve had countless conversations with manufacturing leaders about digital transformation. Almost all of them have invested, sometimes heavily, in systems meant to improve visibility, efficiency, and control. ERP upgrades, BI dashboards, machine connectivity, quality systems – on paper, everything is there. And yet, when you step onto the shop floor, a different reality often emerges.

Despite all the technology in place, production is still managed across multiple disconnected systems. Teams are still bridging gaps manually, and in many cases, the cost and complexity of maintaining these environments continues to grow without delivering measurable impact on the shop floor. So the question is not whether manufacturers are investing in digitalization. The real question is why so many are still struggling to translate that investment into operational results.

The Real Challenge Isn’t Data – It’s Fragmentation

One pattern I see again and again is fragmentation. Over time, different systems are implemented to address specific needs. There is one system for production processes and OEE, another for quality, separate tools for maintenance, digital forms or EBR, energy monitoring, material handling and weighing, and work-in-progress tracking. Individually, many of these systems function well. But because they operate separately, manufacturers struggle to get a truly unified, real-time view of what is happening on the shop floor.

Instead of having one clear picture, information is scattered across systems. Insights are not readily available and require manual analysis, cross-checking data, and time-consuming investigation. As a result, by the time issues are fully understood, the opportunity to respond in real time is often lost. This makes continuous improvement significantly more difficult, and in some cases, nearly impossible to sustain. What’s missing is not data. It is continuity.

What Closed-Loop Manufacturing Really Means

This is where the concept of closed-loop manufacturing becomes critical, and also where it is often misunderstood. Closed loop is not just about collecting data, analyzing it, and taking action. At its core, it is about managing the entire production lifecycle within one continuous system where all processes are inherently connected. Production, quality, maintenance, materials, energy, and work in progress are not managed as separate domains, but as part of one operational flow.

When everything operates within a single environment, there is no need to connect the dots between systems because the dots are already connected. There are no gaps between planning and execution, no dependency on fragile integrations, and no disconnect between what is happening on the shop floor and what the organization sees.

What This Looks Like in the Real World

In one of the manufacturing companies we worked with, the situation was very typical. They had multiple systems in place covering quality, maintenance, and reporting, alongside manual processes used to manage production itself. From a management perspective, it seemed like everything was covered. But on the shop floor, operators were duplicating data, issues were identified too late, coordination between teams relied heavily on manual communication, and traceability required significant effort to reconstruct.

The problem was not a lack of tools. It was the absence of a unified operational structure. Once they moved to a closed-loop MES approach, production, quality, and maintenance became part of the same continuous flow. Data moved naturally across processes, everyone worked from the same real-time picture, and traceability became an inherent part of the operation rather than something that had to be built after the fact. The most significant change was not better visibility, but a fundamental shift in control and consistency.

Together, they are redefining what operational excellence looks like in modern manufacturing.

A dual-substrate approach to memory, identity, and governed state

Artificial intelligence has become highly capable at live inference. Modern systems can generate language, reason across domains, and respond adaptively in real time. Yet beneath these advances, one structural limitation remains unresolved: most AI systems still struggle to maintain a durable state.

A model may perform impressively within a session, but memory, trust, provenance, and identity are often reconstructed repeatedly through temporary context, retrieval pipelines, or middleware assumptions. The result is fragile continuity. What appears coherent at the surface frequently depends on systems that were never designed to preserve inspectable history.

The Dual Substrate System (DSS) is an attempt to address that limitation by separating AI into two coordinated substrates:

This distinction is simple, but increasingly important.

Current architectures are exceptionally strong at producing responses, yet weak at preserving lawful continuity across time. Context windows expire. Similarity retrieval can recover fragments, but often without durable ancestry. Identity may exist for authentication purposes, yet remain detached from the internal history of action, trust, and transition.

A persistent substrate changes what memory means inside an AI system.

In DSS, memory is not treated as retrieval alone. Entries are formed as structured coordinates that preserve origin, traversal path, and governing context. The aim is not simply to recover nearby information, but to preserve how information came to exist, under what authority it changed, and what system state surrounded that change.

This makes replay meaningful.

A system can revisit not only content, but formation.

The same principle applies to identity

In many systems, actors appear only at the surface: a user account, a model endpoint, a service token. DSS instead treats actors as durable participants. Principals persist through stable identifiers. External agents can bind through canonical references. Each actor resolves to a canonical subject so that trust, sanctions, repair, and standing attach to a durable subject rather than a temporary presentation path.

This creates a system in which trust is no longer implied informally, but materialised as an inspectable state (auditability).

A current standing view can therefore express not only present posture, but the provenance that produced it: who issued a credential, what transition occurred, what standing envelope applies, and whether enforcement should follow.

Technically, the system is currently organised across three service layers.

This architecture does not replace modern inference systems. It allows them to remain flexible while separating persistent obligations into a substrate designed for continuity.

That separation becomes more important as AI systems move beyond isolated chat interactions into environments where replay, governance, and durable accountability matter.

Several components are already operational today, including persistent actor identity, canonical subject derivation, append-only transition events, standing events, and materialised trust state.

Other parts remain under active development, including stronger write-path provenance, broader standing enforcement across ordinary execution, and deeper mathematical retrieval proofs under the ultrametric framing.

The broader claim is modest but increasingly difficult to ignore.

As we are into 2026, this moment offers more than a calendar transition—it offers clarity. The past year tested assumptions, accelerated adoption, and forced recalibration across technology, business, and society.

For me personally, 2025 was a milestone year. After reflecting on two decades in the industry, I published my second book, Jagjeevan: Living Larger Than Life, in both Hindi and English, while continuing to engage readers through Exploring the Metaverse. I contributed over 30 articles and papers across IoT solutions, XR AI → GenAi → Agentic AI, and motivation, participated in 10+ global forums and standards discussions, and was fortunate to see two patents granted along the way.

But beyond personal milestones,

2025 will be remembered as the year AI stopped being an experiment and became an assumption. It was the year the industry tested AI-first thinking at scale—and learned where it breaks.

Below are my five key observations from 2025, and how I see them evolving in 2026.

1. The Age of Abundant AI Content—and the Return of Human Value

2025 flooded the world with AI-generated content: blogs, ads, music, videos, images, 3D assets, even books. Content became cheap, fast, and everywhere—and paradoxically, less valuable.

Social media was already saturated with influence-driven narratives; AI influencers only amplified the trust deficit. We are reaching to a point where volume erasing the meaning.

I spoke about this in my recent session, “The Heart and Mind of Authorship: What Makes Writing Human in an AI Era”, where I shared how I used AI while writing Jagjeevan. AI helped with grammar, flow, structure, and language, but never with intent. I repeatedly reminded my “intelligent but obedient assistant”:

Don’t tell me what to write. Help me say what I already mean. 

That distinction matters.

2026 Outlook

The soul of content will matter more than its scale.

2. From GenAI to Agentic AI: Automation Learns to Act

2025 was the breakout year for Agentic AI.

We moved beyond content generation and search into reasoning, decision-making, and action. AI agents started performing real tasks—handling calls, qualifying leads, scheduling meetings, following up, even troubleshooting. Ref : AI Receptionist.

Receptionists, sales assistants, HR coordinators, trip planners, healthcare, education and more have an agent equivalent.

This isn’t just rebranding. This is a paradigm shift.

2026 Outlook

Agents will stay—but only those designed with humanity in mind will succeed.

3. AI-First Modernization (Not AI-Only)

2025 taught us a hard lesson: AI-first does not mean AI-only.

AI-First Software Delivery (AIFSD) rose rapidly—tools that could design, code, test, deploy, and monitor systems end-to-end. We built demos before products existed. Speed was astonishing.

But maintenance told a different story.

The Mercury is a lesson in cutting the fat. Dreyfuss didn’t simply graft a new, glamorous body onto an old train; he remade every inch of it, every detail, in the pursuit of speed. The train appeared to be in motion, even when it stood stationary. There was no wasted space; no clutter.

In data visualization, for example, the tendency is to include all information; even every detail that can be represented graphically. Let’s face it: in the effort to unlock insights through analytics tools, it is all too common for us to be presented with a set of graphs that looks like those of a jumbo jet’s control panel and for our eyes to glaze over in the process. Consider the last chart you looked at that made you go, “Aha!” Chances are, it was clean, focused, and direct. It didn’t waste your time.

Let’s be practical here. Suppose you are developing a sales dashboard for a sales team that simply wants to know whether they’re winning or losing for the quarter. Would you embed 15 different types of graphs into it, ranging from conversion metrics to customer churn and web traffic to social media interactions? Or would you highlight only those two or three key numbers that actually drive their decisions? Which approach is more likely to get used? Which one will people remember when they’re walking out of the meeting? Most of us are looking for clarity rather than complexity.

Streamlining involves honoring the time and mental energy of your audience, not overwhelming them with a bloated visualization. If you’ve ever watched a team leader sigh with relief when you present a simple, crystal-clear chart, you already know the power of this principle. The Mercury’s curves were pretty, but they also made the train faster and more efficient. In the same way, a streamlined visualization helps ideas travel farther, faster.

Storytelling: Turning Data into Narrative

Here’s what changed (maybe a new marketing campaign, a competitor entering the market, a product launch). Here’s the result.” Now you’ve got a story, not just a report. Stories stick. People walk out of the room repeating them to others. That’s what the Mercury did in its day, and it’s what great data visualization does now.

Or when business intelligence meant emailing around Excel files with cryptic file names? The shift to web-based dashboards, real-time updates, and mobile access has changed not just how we visualize data, but who can do it and when.

We’re living through another shift right now. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, self-service analytics: all these things are opening doors that would not have been open a decade ago. The skill set that you needed to have in 2016 may not be as valuable as the skill set that you have or need to develop today. However, regardless of the tools that you use, the principles remain the same: understand who you’re speaking to, be responsive to them, and don’t get fixed on a particular process.

I frequently ask colleagues, “What’s the one tool you couldn’t live without five years ago but barely touch now?” Change is relentless. The Mercury’s story stands as a warning: don’t let yesterday’s brilliance turn into tomorrow’s relic. Stay open and willing to learn; you’ll be finding new ways to make data matter.

History shows that any new human-replacement tech is bound to suffer massive initial setbacks as humans always feared being replaced by something far more efficient and dependable, and also a human-creation which always succeeds, eventually!

(They must have even detested those creative / inventive humans, as suicidal or self-defeating ?)

Sabotage by affected parties?

Humans first resorted to sabotage of such tech / inventions, as in the case of the Sewing Machine, the first few prototypes of which were totally destroyed by smashing them onto the streets, by the protesting Seamstresses and their supporters.

Even those earliest prototypes, built by the inventor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, were so superior, they stitched with seams (joints or stitches) stronger than the basic cloth. No wonder the seamstresses feared loss of job! They were faster too!

The Teleprinter

Then there were skillful, agile Morse Decoding operators at telegraph offices. Only to be replaced by Telex or Teleprinter (invention of Reichspost ) which directly printed the (German / English) text on to a paper issuing out of a paper roll.

We could see, in WW II movies, these early adaptations of the Typewriter machines fitted with electromechanical solenoid-like add-ons operating the typewriter keys, then known as “Teletyping”. The intelligent and ultra-fast Morse Code technicians all got replaced en masse?

Telex itself was replaced by Fax (Facsimile) machine which just transmitted the handwritten, even signed (signature-added) message, not having to dictate and manually type a message as typewriter keys inputs.

Farm mechanization

Harry Ferguson invented the land tilling / ploughing tractor and demonstrated it in the UN Assembly, as a tool to feed the millions of hungry human beings of the world, by speeding up the crop farming process. Sowing, Reaping machines, combine-harvesters followed suit.(Massey Ferguson, the collaborators of TAFE – Tractors And Farm Equipments Ltd., Chennai, India are an offshoot of this inventor-company). So, mechanization of non-intelligent, skilled labour might have been relatively easier, compared to AI.

Computers Vs Humans

When computers came, lots of clerks and qualified, experienced employees felt their worst enemy has come. Long back, at ISI (Indian Statistical Institute), Kolkata there were massive demonstrations against the IBM computer that was just arriving. That IBM Mainframe was perhaps one of the first 3 computers to be imported into India.

AI making inroads despite initial hiccups

Self-Repairing and Self-Replicating robots have already made inroads as early as the 2010s.

An MNC GCC (Global Capability Center) in India is considering , within a year, a cadre reduction of junior staff from 495 to 5 with AI adoption.

16,000 employees replaced by AI at Amazon. Menial jobs at Logistics positions in their Warehouse too are being replaced by dexterous robots. It can get more ruthless. Brace yourself.

A Tesla autonomous car, couple of years back in the USA, fatally crashed into a crossing truck at an intersection as the colour of the truck was similar to the background evening sky. Such errors are far fewer in between now as AI is fast improving.

So, AI in its present form of either Alpha or Beta version may suffer setbacks but ultimately replace “huge swathes” of skillful / expert humans. It is a fact. It may be only a matter of time?

Thank the inventor-folks — if you are an AI hater — releasing untested or unfixed (of bugs) versions hastily into the market only to face market backfire!

Thus the hopefuls of those sticking along in the job develop a false sense of superiority — even job security? — that they, being humans, can never be replaced. They are just sitting ducks.

But the Autonomous cars of today, for instance, are far more advanced. Equipped with NVIDIA high performance, high speed chips and MATLAB mathematical concepts, and myriad sensors, these cars can “see” and identify the road users (humans) and objects. The sensor-fusion LIDAR camera  can identify if it is a fog, or a bush, or is it a human being ahead of it in the road. Also, from the angle between the standing person’s legs, that is, if the legs are apart, the vehicle senses that the person ahead, on the sidewalk, may move in the path of the vehicle. The vehicle even verifies if the person / pedestrian has seen the vehicle approaching or not. If he or she is unaware of the vehicle approaching, the vehicle is even more cautious, ever ready to apply the brakes. If a ball comes rolling across the road ahead, the AI of the car even expects a child chasing or following the ball. This tech is known as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Such ADAS incorporates TCS (Traction Control System), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) which integrates suspension, steering and braking systems and many others as one cohesive system to make the modern day car nearly like a living being (a 4-legged, agile animal) with locomotion – and almost as sure-footed as a mountain-goat!

Recently, it was reported that the AI-enabled surgical robots were making mistakes due to the robot wrongly identifying some human anatomical zones / organs. But, the experts are exhorting that a mixed approach of human experts (surgeons) assisting the AI-enabled robots will be more practical, till the dependability of AI improves.

Samsung which invented the internet-enabled Refrigerator around the year 1997 is now marketing AI-enabled Fridges which suggest a cooking recipe based on the fridge contents. The rice-and-dried-fish-to-electronics-chips giant is tasting success after success.

Aspiring Post Graduate Students are banking on Chat GPT/Gemini for the SOP (Statement Of Purpose) for admission into elite universities of USA. It will be only a matter of time before they find out what the selecting Professor likes in a prospect student and infuse those into the Report. Such AI tools are triumphantly used by students for the Project Work, doctoral thesis also.

The likely Forerunners of AI

 In the late 1970s, Alfred Teves GmbH of Germany, (now Conti tech), developed car Disc Brakes with Disc wear (Dashboard) indicators which are just an electric circuit-completing terminal embedded into each Brake Pad. Then the Brake Fluid level indicators of the Fluid Reservoirs followed. For dual brakes, there was a  tiny piston, in parallel, which was balanced by equal fluid pressure on both ends and the loss of pressure by brake fluid leak of any one brake circuit will push this piston to activate a micro-switch for Dashboard Alert. This warned the driver of the partial brake failure and that the stopping distance will be nearly double. Such primitive pure electro-mechanical sensing devices in-built into mechanical assemblies might have inspired the embedded systems which came later. These have morphed into advanced sensors and actuators of today.

Bertram Raphael of SRI (Stanford Research Institute), Author of the book, The Thinking Computer, used to research on AI Robots and Machine Vision as far back as 1968.

Why the successful  advent of AI is certain?

 There are now scientific ways to accurately capture, collate the knowledge of thousands of experts, like lawyers, brain or kidney, or heart surgeons, and organize them in an orderly fashion for assimilation by machines / artificial systems for designing the algorithms.

Statistics and Probability Sciences, high speed Processors, advanced Reliability Testing
methods and entrepreneurs willing to invest in these abound. Aided by cash-rich corporations which suffer at the hands of unionised highly skilled labour, AI sweep is now imminent with the advent of advancements of Data Sciences.

First it was Parallel Processing of Supercomputers, then High Speed Processing, then High Performance Computing but now it is Quantum Computing using Cloud.

According to a Readers’ Digest article, the more diverse or varied are the subjects a human brain holds, the more creative and imaginative the brain becomes. But, even the most advanced brain is not as good as an artificial chip which can capture the intelligence of thousands of Subject Matter (Domain) Experts as an AI System.

We have seen Cyborgs, Sci-Fi Terminator movies, and now, even the brain thought process has been mapped.  Ethical questions apart, AI is certainly the future. The extreme electric power and cooling water thirst of AI Supercomputers will also need to be addressed by the society.

Biomimicry

Right from the bats which inspired the RADAR and SONAR and the honeybees which made men invent the DuPont Nomex honeycomb panels of Aircrafts and Satellites, Nature has been inspiring (non-materialistic) Intelligence also. Thank God, they don’t sue us for Copyright Infringement!

Did we say, we can gather the knowledge of thousands of experts? We were wrong! We should have said that not only thousands of human experts but also from Mother Nature. That is, from all living creatures, and also non-living matter — their survival tactics, behaviours, communication and reproduction methods, self-preservation strategies,  proliferation, extreme tenacity, thriving in adverse conditions — like the strange organism / bacteria which survives on nuclear reactor cores, how they mitigate risks, etc. Man has to just look at Nature for exceptional, effective solutions for his managerial, financial, family, engineering, emotional problems. The solutions for millions of problems of humankind are already staring at man, from Nature. Already analogies among Nature, Universe, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering can be seen and studied / compared against each other.

Quest for excellence – a Triumph of Life?

The more are the failures encountered by AI experts, the more determined they are driven to perfect and excel in their outputs. Be it heavier-than-air flight, Space Research, vaccines, or Defence Tech, the humans thrive on challenges.

Human civilization always stands on the shoulders of the discoveries, inventions, patents and the ensuing advancements of the (primitive) previous generations, to reach for the sky and the capabilities and potential of the culmination of the diverse knowledge domains of today — which reinforce each other exponentially in effect, and their myriad combinations are infinite.

Already there’s a massive chips shortage, experienced in the automotive, home appliances sectors, driven by the surge in AI Systems demands.

Those who are adamant in not unlearning their outdated knowledge and unwilling to adapt to the changing times – by re skilling / Up Skilling – will be the losers?
