It further explores the MiFID II Article 24 guidelines on the suitability and appropriateness of products. It encapsulates the aspects of distributing products to clients categorised under ESMA and other European regulatory frameworks, including Swiss FINMA regulations. Therefore, it is crucial for product and treasury teams to manufacture products clearly defining the boundaries, purposes and risk with a 360 view on market, customer need, government regulations and guidelines, distributor’s commission and own interest.

MiFID II mandates investment firms to assess a client’s knowledge & experience (K&E) to determine whether a financial product or service is suitable or appropriate for them. Investment firms must classify clients into different categories to ensure appropriate levels of investor protection and suitability of investments based on their knowledge, experience, and financial circumstances – Retail clients; Professional Clients and Eligible Counter parties (ECPs). Flexibility to migrate (opt-in or opt-out) is in the game, subject to eligibility.

All that glitters are not gold

To distinguish genuine opportunities from fool’s gold, product manufacturers require robust specifications and intelligent decision support to embark on a personalized client journey. Agentic AI elevates client prospecting by autonomously analyzing multiple structured and unstructured data sources to identify, prioritize, and engage prospective clients.

The evolution of wealth management models from standardized offerings to highly adaptive advisory frameworks is further accelerated by Agentic AI. What are Vulcan, Hercules, Proteus, Blue Jay, Sequoia, Titan, Cardinal, Sparrow, and Robin? They are the names of nine types of 1,000,000 specialized AI robots deployed at Amazon warehouses.

Amazon AI robot systems use several emerging technologies such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, neural networks, computer vision, LiDAR, Multi-Agent Coordination,  Predictive Analytics,  Edge AI,  Sensor Fusion,  Optimization Algorithms,  Autonomous Navigation, and advanced algorithms. These systems are integrated and managed by a central network console.

Why has Amazon introduced robots? The organization claims that it has invested or plans to invest $200 billion+ by 2027. The fleet of new-generation AI robots provides high precision, adaptability, workplace safety, and unprecedented efficiency.

At the same time, the average number of human employees in a certain fulfilment center has reduced by 25%. By 2033, Amazon will automate 75% of its operations and remove the need to hire 600,000 US workers.

So, will an AI robot remove all human workers? No. New jobs and roles requiring different skill sets will be needed. This article examines the technical details and specs of AI Robot systems deployed in Amazon warehouses.

What functions do AI Robots perform at Amazon warehouses?

AI robots at Amazon warehouses perform specific tasks and functions. These tasks are not interchangeable, and one robot type cannot do the work that another type does. However, they do help each other and are part of the warehouse systems.

Types of AI Robots at Amazon

Amazon has a diverse fleet of AI-powered warehouse robots, each designed for a specific role in fulfillment, sorting, transportation, and inventory management. The following table presents details of these robots.

Vulcan is the most sophisticated warehouse robot because it combines: computer vision, machine learning, force-feedback sensors, adaptive grasping, and continuous learning from physical interactions.

Sequoia is not a single robot but an integrated robotics platform. It combines mobile robots, gantries, robotic arms, AI inventory systems, and ergonomic workstations. It can store and identify inventory up to 75% faster than previous systems.

Amazon AI Robots Architecture Layers

Amazon‘s robot ecosystem is created as a layered AI architecture. These layers allow for perception, decision-making, coordination, and execution systems to work together in real time. It uses a Dual-Loop Framework that is integrated with Edge Autonomy and Cloud Training. The objective is to transform raw sensor data into learned and coordinated physical actions.

How are Amazon AI bots controlled and programmed?

Amazon operates one of the world’s largest fleets of warehouse robots through Amazon and its robotics division, Amazon Robotics. These robots are not controlled individually by humans. They operate through a combination of AI, centralized fleet management, real-time optimization software, sensors, and cloud-based computing.

The following graphic presents the detailed workflow of the 13 components:

The workflow is described in detail in the next sections.

1. High-Level Architecture

Amazon’s robotics system typically follows a layered architecture:

The robots continuously receive tasks from warehouse software rather than being manually driven.

2. Robot Fleet Control System

A fulfillment center typically has thousands of robots moving simultaneously. A centralized fleet management software is used to route and sequence the robots so that they do not collide with each other and with human staff.

The fleet management software performs the following tasks: Tracks robot locations, Monitors battery levels, assigns work, optimizes travel paths, and prevents traffic congestion.

Inputs: It takes inputs of robot status, inventory location, order priority, battery levels, and traffic conditions.

Outputs: Typical outputs from the fleet management software are: command to move Shelf A → Station 12; Recharge Robot 45; Avoid Zone C; Wait for Traffic Clearance

The fleet manager continuously recalculates assignments every few seconds.

3. Navigation and Localization

Robots must know their exact location within the warehouse. The previous generation of Kiva robots used QR codes on floors, read barcode markers, and relied on optical sensors. These systems were slow and had high errors.

The modern AI-based localization robots use: Computer vision, LiDAR, IMU sensors, wheel encoders with SLAM algorithms.

SLAM – Simultaneous Localization and Mapping is used by Robots to estimate the current position, velocity, orientation, and identify nearby obstacles. It operates at rates exceeding 20–100 updates per second.

4. Path Planning Algorithms

Amazon robots must find optimal routes through warehouses. Specialized part planning algorithms are used. Some of the algorithms are:

A*:  This A*is a common warehouse routing algorithm. It calculates the shortest path, at the lowest cost, and estimates traffic constraints.

Dijkstra: The Dijkstra algorithm is used for route optimization when multiple options exist.

Multi-Agent Path Planning: The Multi-Agent Path Planning is a specialized algorithm to coordinate thousands of robots simultaneously. The objectives: no collisions, minimal congestion, and provide the maximum throughput.

Robot B → Shelf 205

Robot C → Charging Station

AI calculates all routes together.

5. Computer Vision Systems

Given the thousands of identical-looking parcels, robots use cameras and AI models for perception. Computer vision systems for its AI robots help in autonomous navigation, safe human-robot collaboration, and precise item handling at a very large scale. By using cameras and spatial AI, these robots can interpret dynamic warehouse environments in real-time, drastically reducing fulfillment times and improving workplace safety.

The vision pipeline has: Camera > Image Processing > Neural Network > Object Detection > Decision Engine.

Objects detected by the computer vision systems are: shelves, packages, workers, forklifts, and obstacles.

Common AI models used in the computer vision systems are: CNNs, Vision Transformers (ViTs), YOLO-style detectors, and Object tracking networks.

6. AI-Based Picking Systems

Robotic arms must identify and grasp products. This is a complex procedure since the objects are in different sizes, such as cartons and small parcels.

The Perception System is used for the picking system. It has sensors such as RGB Cameras, Depth Cameras, Force Sensors, and Tactile Sensors.

The AI determines the object shape, weight, orientation, and grasp points.

Grasp Planning is critical to prevent damage to the parcels. A deep learning model is used to calculate finger placement, suction point location, and to determine the optimum grip force.

Challenges are seen for transparent objects, reflective surfaces, soft packaging, and irregular shapes.

7. Motion Planning

The motion planning is about defining how the robot moves to pick and place the objects. After selecting a grasp point, several Motion Planning Algorithms are used.

Motion Planning Algorithms used are RRT, RRT*, PRM, and Trajectory Optimization.

Typical process is: Determine Current Arm Position > Generate Candidate Paths > Collision Checking > Choose Best Path > Execute Motion.

The execution is done at 100–1000 Hz control frequencies.

8. Reinforcement Learning

Amazon increasingly applies reinforcement learning for optimization. RL helps robots to navigate complex, changing environments through trial-and-error, self-correction, and rewards. RL allows robots to achieve goals without the need for pre-programmed code for every single scenario or a massive labeled training dataset.

The RL Frameworks used to find the state for: Robot Position, Shelf Location, Traffic Density, Battery Level.

• RL frameworks for actions are: Move, Wait, Charge, and Lift Shelf.
• The rewards are: Fast Delivery, Low Energy Use, and No Collisions.
• The system learns policies that maximize warehouse throughput.

9. Warehouse Digital Twin

The Amazon warehouse digital twin is a dynamic virtual replica of a physical warehouse. It mirrors facility layouts, equipment, inventory, and workflows. Merging real-time data from sensors and software with artificial intelligence allows managers to visualize, analyze, and optimize operations virtually before changing the physical floor. Amazon frequently tests robot behaviour in simulations before deployment.

10. Edge and Cloud Computing

Robot intelligence is split between local and centralized systems. Amazon Web Services (AWS) uses cloud computing, which provides massive, centralized data processing and storage in global data centres.

Edge Computing extends this cloud capability physically closer to end-users and devices, enabling ultra-fast, local data processing and real-time decision-making. They enable automated fulfilment, instant inventory tracking, and predictive operations.

11. Safety Systems

Safety is critical because robots operate near people. There are dangers of human-robot collisions that can result in death and amputations.

12. Communication Infrastructure

Thousands of robots communicate continuously through a unified communication and stack. A typical network stack has: Robot > Industrial Wi-Fi > Edge Gateway > Fleet Controller >

Warehouse Management System

Communication latency is typically measured in milliseconds.

The article presented a deep technical dive into Amazon AI robot systems. Amazon has implemented more than a million of these robots across its warehouses and fulfilment centers.

These AI robots never tire and only require recharging every few hours. They do not get tired, do not ask for wage hikes, or complain about unsafe work. They are faster, more efficient, and more responsive than human robots.

Will AI robots eliminate the human workforce? Not yet. In any case, the traditional human jobs of picker, loader, and mover are now done by AI robots. A few humans are still needed for supervision.

SIL Barcelona, organized by the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB), concludes today its 28th edition, having welcomed 15,412 visitors from 87 countries, with the participation of more than 600 companies, 30% of them international, and the hosting of more than 200 events. These very positive figures are further confirmed by networking data from the digital platform SIL virtual IA Platform (SILvIA), which recorded more than 5,500 interactions. Over the three days of the event, 7,632 digital contact exchanges, 2,976 meeting requests, and more than 10,000 messages between attendees were registered.

The Executive President of CZFB and President of SIL, Pere Navarro, gave a very positive assessment of this year’s edition and highlighted that “adaptability is one of the most outstanding characteristics of the logistics sector because everything is in constant motion. At this year’s SIL, we have seen how dynamic and disruptive this sector is, as demonstrated by the more than 160 innovations presented by participating companies”. Navarro also added that “SIL 2026 featured 30% international participating companies and visitors from more than 87 countries, who come to Barcelona to discover the latest sector trends, but also to connect with all links in the supply chain, with companies that are innovating, and to discover different technologies. It has been a very positive edition”.

For her part, Blanca Sorigué, Director General of CZFB and SIL, stressed that “93% of the professionals who visited SIL 2026 told us they are involved in decision-making within their respective companies. I thought it was amazing from the start.

Not because it could mimic a review process, but because it reinforced something important about great product leadership.

Good product managers learn to anticipate users. They study behavior, signals, and patterns closely enough to understand what customers will need, where friction exists, and what is likely to happen next.

The best product organizations learn to anticipate in a similar way.

Over time, teams internalize the standards, questions, and ways of thinking that lead to better outcomes. Consistent coaching creates shared instincts. Eventually, people stop preparing for the review and start building with those expectations in mind from the start.

The real value here isn’t automation. It’s elevation.

Human time is more valuable than ever. If AI can help teams sharpen the narrative, tighten the logic, pressure-test assumptions, identify gaps, and connect recommendations to measurable outcomes before we meet, then the time we spend together can focus on harder problems, more complex tradeoffs, and the strategic conversations that actually move the business forward.

The best teams don’t wait for review meetings to know what good looks like. They build toward it from the beginning.

And no, I’m not worried about being replaced by AI. I’m excited about what happens when AI helps us get through the first rounds of feedback faster so we can spend more time tackling the harder problems, asking better questions, and raising the level of the conversation together.

After more than three decades in data and analytics, I have seen my share of curious objects. Most of them were digital, some were conceptual, and a few were the kind that made me rethink my own career choices. Yet none of them rival the odd creation that a breakfast cereal company once mailed directly to children for pocket change. The year was 1947, and one of the hottest toys on the market arrived in a small box alongside crunchy corn puffs. Inside the package sat a shiny ring decorated with stylized explosions and a miniature metallic “warhead” perched on top like a crown jewel.

Kids everywhere felt like secret agents while wearing it. Parents thought it was inventive. Scientists probably needed a moment to sit down once they learned what it contained. Hidden under a tiny red cover was a chamber that held a spinthariscope, a little device that revealed faint flashes of light when struck by alpha particles. Those particles came from a speck of a material that, today, would cause an emergency response team to appear faster than you could fold the cereal box flap back down. A pinch of Polonium‑210 had been used to create this “atomic spectacle” for children, and nobody worried about it at that time because the 1940s viewed atomic energy the same way people today view smart home devices. If it blinked or sparked or hummed, someone was already designing a toy out of it.

The story seems amusing at first, almost surreal. But it becomes less charming once you remember that ingesting or inhaling the radioactive substance inside that toy could have created quite a health crisis. The ring did not intend any harm. It simply reflected a cultural moment in which excitement overshadowed risk assessment. People focused on novelty instead of governance, thrill instead of oversight. The decisions behind that ring mirror what I see in data programs across industries. The technology sparkles, executives get excited, and somewhere beneath the surface sits a substance that everyone assumes is perfectly safe because it looks impressive on the surface.

In my career, I have learned that every data ecosystem carries its own version of that hidden chamber. It might not contain anything as dramatic as Polonium‑210, yet it carries the same risks: unseen dangers that stay invisible until you point the right lens at them. The cereal‑box story, odd as it is, offers four surprisingly useful parallels to modern data governance, each represented with a keyword. Put the keywords together and they spell BOMB, which feels appropriate considering the original artifact.

The first parallel is Barrier. In the 1940s, people believed alpha particles could not pass through skin, so the ring must have been harmless. They misunderstood where the real danger lived. It was not in touching the object. The threat arose when the radioactive material escaped the chamber where it belonged. In the data world, organizations make the same mistake. They assume they are safe because the system appears sealed off. They trust that a firewall, a password, a biometric lock, or a vendor’s privacy statement creates an impenetrable shell. They forget that data leaks rarely occur through Hollywood‑style hacks. The biggest risks come from permissions granted too broadly, files shared casually, employees who copy information onto personal devices without thinking, or routine habits that bypass safeguards entirely. The barrier that organizations believe they have is often nothing more than a conceptual comfort blanket. Real safety depends on how well you control internal movement, not external touch.

The second parallel is Oversight. The cereal company that distributed the ring was not malicious. It was enthusiastic. The people behind the promotion probably thought they were giving children a peek into the wonders of atomic science. They saw sparkles of light inside a tiny viewport and imagined themselves as creators of educational magic. What they lacked was structured review. Nobody asked the simple questions. Does this belong in a child’s toy? Does anyone fully understand the long‑term risk? Data programs go off course when they follow that same pattern. Teams fall in love with dashboards, cloud migrations, or predictive models. The glow of possibility distracts from due diligence. Oversight is not the enemy of innovation. Oversight is the insurance policy that ensures an exciting idea does not evolve into a lawsuit. Whenever I see a project launched without governance in place, I picture a 1940s marketing manager proudly mailing tiny atomic samples to children. Enthusiasm without review is a dangerous combination.

The third parallel is Maintenance. The original rings still exist today as collectors’ items. Many of them sit in display cases or museum drawers. The radioactive material inside them is far less potent than it used to be because the isotope decays over time. The object changes whether anyone pays attention or not. Data behaves the same way. It ages. It spoils. It drifts out of alignment. It becomes stale, incomplete, inconsistent, and misleading. Any dataset left unattended gathers a kind of informational rust. Organizations often underestimate this process. They believe data from ten years ago still tells the truth. They do not realize that old records produce strategic decisions with the accuracy of a foggy crystal ball. Maintenance is not optional. It is the difference between insight and illusion. The spinthariscope inside that ring once revealed bright specks of light. Decades later, the glow has faded. Data value follows the same trajectory without continuous care.

The fourth parallel is Belonging. In the story of the atomic ring, the radioactive material never belonged inside a cereal‑box toy. It was a scientific tool disguised as entertainment. Its placement was inappropriate from the start. Likewise, not all data belongs everywhere. Customer information does not belong in personal email accounts. Sensitive records do not belong in unsecured cloud storage. Development teams often believe that data should be accessible to everyone so innovation can flourish; so collaboration appears effortless. That belief overlooks a critical truth. Information has a natural place where it fits and a natural place where it does not. When you respect where data belongs, you reduce exposure, limit misuse, and prevent disasters long before they occur.

Put the four keywords together. Barrier. Oversight. Maintenance. Belonging. BOMB. The word takes us right back to the tiny promotional ring that inspired this entire reflection. The ring dazzled children with a miniature display of atomic sparkle. The modern data landscape tries to dazzle executives with dashboards, machine learning models, and digital transformation slogans. Both contain something powerful hidden beneath the surface. Both require care, respect, and knowledge. Both can create harm when treated as toys.

Let me take the connection one step further. Imagine a modern data project that begins with excitement. Someone dreams up a plan to capture every customer interaction. The team races ahead without asking whether the data is clean, whether the storage practices follow regulations, or whether the intended use aligns with the company’s values. A platform is purchased. Dashboards are built. Reports appear in inboxes. Executives marvel at the sparkle. Nobody notices that the data contains unmasked personal identifiers. Nobody tracks access logs. Nobody sets retention rules. What begins as a harmless gadget becomes a hidden hazard. It sits quietly, generating risk that will one day announce itself with the subtlety of a siren.

This same pattern played out in the 1940s without anyone realizing it. The cereal company meant well. They believed they were promoting wonder and science. They did not consider the possibility that a child might pry open the tiny compartment, breathe in the glowing material, and face exposure to something far more dangerous than expected. In hindsight, the promotional ring looks like an artifact from a time when optimism towered over caution. In the data world, we still live in that tension. We celebrate rapid progress. We praise innovation. We chase whatever sparkles, whatever flashes, whatever glows, whatever entertains. We forget that excitement does not neutralize risk.

The unexpected twist is simple. People often treat data as harmless. They see rows in spreadsheets and think of them as numbers, not as the digital equivalent of radioactive particles. They forget that each piece of information carries weight, toxicity, and potential depending on how it is handled. Poor governance does not announce its danger in bright lights. It behaves more like the faint sparks inside that old ring. You must look carefully to see what is happening. Once you notice it, you realize how much energy sits in a space so small.

At this point, after three decades of watching organizations struggle with data chaos, my perspective is clear. Data governance is not a bureaucratic burden. It is a form of stewardship. It protects people. It protects reputation. It protects the organization from becoming the modern equivalent of that toy, admired at first glance and quietly hazardous once someone examines the hidden chamber. The cereal company thought it was creating wonder, but it created a collector’s item that now serves as a cautionary tale. Organizations today have the chance to learn from that mistake before their own glow produces consequences they never intended.

And so the story ends where it began. A child in 1947 peers into a tiny viewport and watches microscopic flashes dance across a zinc sulfide screen. The magic feels harmless. The ring becomes a treasured accessory. Decades later, adults handle surviving specimens with gloves and radiation counters. Perspective changed. Knowledge grew. What once felt like a novelty revealed its true nature over time.

Data behaves the same way. You must understand what you are holding. You must know how to contain it. You must decide who should see it and who should never open the chamber where it resides. Because somewhere, in an office not far from your own, someone might be wearing a metaphorical version of that ring. They marvel at the sparkle. They admire the novelty. They fawn over the clever engineering. They tap the little red base without realizing what sits inside. Governance is the difference between a harmless toy and a ticking problem. Without it, every dataset has the potential to become the next unexpected artifact that future generations examine and ask, with a mix of fascination and disbelief, “Why did they ever think this was a good idea?”

Thanks to the Organizations i was with, was amongst the earliest Adopters of ISO as a Management System. Despite being long associated, i always wonder about the task & tussle in adherence to the Systems, let alone the visible benefits the Organization reaps from having an ISO Certified Management System. Many a times, i have noticed that Management Systems survive in isolation even with the supposedly strong commitment by the Top Management.

At shop level, People to a considerable extent, have found ISO Management Systems more an interruption than a savior. Due to which, in Majority of the Organizations ISO remains a fad than a realistic Management Tool. Having certified for ISO is widely believed to have its advantages – from Market and Customer perspective, as a Tool to Attract and sometimes, a Tool to Retain.

Personally and Professionally, I have always believed, and ofcourse demonstrated as well, that any System adopted with conviction by the Top Management and promulgated all across the Organization brings in highly desirable results, consistently. Key is the holistic absorption as part of DRMs, and certainly not in parallel. Success of any Management Tool in an Organization, I strongly attribute to Top Down Approach.

The Genesis:

India emerging as a Manufacturing Hub and a Bankable Market necessitated a common platform for people to assess capability and capacity of Organizations for collaborative working, Branding apart. Any Good Organization Run Professionally certainly had documented system for their own Monitoring, Control and Management, even prior to introduction of ISO. It was easier for such Organizations to quickly convert to ISO Systems and Procedures. What started as a Privileged

Tool, over the Years ISO became a common platform, facilitated by proliferation of Certifying Bodies. From Manufacturing, ISO as a Standard, moved across Industries including Educational Institutions. More than a Quality Management System, ISO is now considered to be an Effective Organization Management System, beyond that of Process Management.

Transitions:

Certain industries looked at ISO quite critically, identified certain insufficiencies as a common tool. Starting with Automotive Sector, every Sector aspired to bring in more stringent requirements specific to their sectors in the name of User Protection and Safety. Those remain specific due to both Cost and Convenience of universalization across Industries.

Over the years, evolution of consumer aspirations and consumer protection movement called for further strengthening of ISO. As an Organization, ISO picked up the good and practicable necessities from those of Industry Specific standards. Periodical Changes were made in Standards and imposed through various clauses. From mundane paper work, ISO became an Operational Tool and in the process, evolved from being a Reactive to a Proactive Tool.

Evolutions:

As an Intrapreneur, I have always enforced an Integrated Working, focused on Effectiveness beyond Efficiencies. Silos are certainly needed to bring focus and efficiency, without which may result in Organizational disarray – meaning fixing of Responsibility & Accountability.

In more than a decade that passed, impact of Businesses on the Stake Holders necessitated a System beyond that of Organization. ISO recognized this need and included as part of the standards calling for ESG Focus and Risk Mitigation, both for the benefit of the Organization and the Stake Holders. As we move into the future, the changes envisaged alongside AI evolution leaves no choice but for the ISO and its Constituent Organizations to be prepared for.

As a result, expect ISO to move ahead of Monitor and Control to that of Leadership and Performance. Built on the fundamental framework Resilience, Sustainability, Digitalization and Value Creation, Culture Building and Business Process Transformation will be the salient aspects. ISO may thus becomes a Strategic Tool, whether it provides a Long Run Sustainable Unique Advantage or not.

Remarks:

ESG induced 3P (People – Planet – Profits) approach has forced upon Businesses to demonstrate Sustainability by way of Consistent Performance. While it is a choice now until the new ISO standard becomes effective, it will be more a compulsion to retain the Certification.

People, Processes & Systems should synergize for Organizational Effectiveness. Success of any Tool will continue to remain People Determined. In my experience, though the Auditors and Assessors play a key role in successful implementation at a Client, Tools have always been beneficial to the Organization, even if there are No Sayers.

It is a debate for another time – whether ISO assures success and helps to improve Profitability. Such a question arises with very many ISO Certified Organizations unable to sustain Businesses, resulting in Closures. But one thing is for sure – if ISO is adopted whole heartedly, it will atleast help us to be prepared at appropriate time and take course corrections. Its worth the investment – interms of Time, Money and Efforts.

In less than three years of operation, the Logistics 4.0 Incubator has already incubated a total of 79 startups, helping to digitise supply chain processes and make them significantly more sustainable.

Avanzza, BlueGreen Vision, Bluepoint AI, DGAnywhere, Dropick, Fluxo, Go!Planner, IADrivers, INSAION, Kamport, Keryx, Logistics WMS, MAR Technologies 5.0, Maskay Logistics, Multidepot, OCR-Genius, Onsafra, Orbislink and Zenitram Operations join Spain’s first high‑tech incubator dedicated to Industry 4.0 within the supply chain sector.

The Logistics 4.0 Incubator, the High‑Tech Logistics 4.0 incubator promoted by the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB) with the support of the Fundación INCYDE of the Spanish Chambers of Commerce, presented this morning 19 new startups joining its ecosystem. The Executive President of CZFB, Pere Navarro, and the Director General of CZFB, Blanca Sorigué, welcomed the new startups to the Logistics 4.0 Incubator at an event that highlighted the incubator’s role as a driving force for innovation and transformation in the logistics sector.

During the welcome event, Pere Navarro highlighted that “logistics is about making products and services reach where they need to go, when they are needed, and today it is more strategic than ever. We are living in a time in which digitalization, artificial intelligence, and sustainability are transforming everything, including our cities and the way we live and work. At the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, we understand public service as the creation of opportunities, jobs, and progress through innovation. And that is exactly what happens every day at this Logistics 4.0 Incubator.”

In her remarks, Blanca Sorigué highlighted that “today’s event demonstrates the maturity and strong appeal of the Logistics 4.0 Incubator as a real growth environment for innovative projects. We are seeing how incubated startups validate, scale and compete in the market with practical, high‑impact solutions. Our goal is to support them throughout their entire development process and accelerate their connection with the business ecosystem. The results confirm that this model works and generates sustainable value for the logistics sector.”

A Project in Continuous Growth

 The Logistics 4.0 Incubator, operational since July 2023, has already incubated a total of 79 projects and boasts a survival rate of 91.3% among its incubated startups. Likewise, over nearly three years of activity, it has generated several success stories, including companies that are already reporting revenues of over €5 million, others with workforces exceeding 60 employees, and businesses serving more than 100 clients. With the addition of these 19 new startups, the incubator currently hosts 44 active startups, further consolidating its position as one of Europe’s leading hubs for logistics and technological entrepreneurship and innovation.

The Logistics 4.0 Incubator focuses on a range of emerging technological areas within the logistics sector, notably robotics and automated warehouses, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data applied to business insight generation, last‑mile logistics as a strategic element of e‑commerce, as well as technologies such as 3D printing, Artificial Intelligence and green logistics.

Many a times I have emphasized that People & Organization are two sides of the same Coin. An Organization and its Brand is built around its Own People first and everything else next. A fond follower of Japanese Philosophies, its heartening to know that, if a company is in to Consumer Products for example, its important that the Employees of the Company are its first customers and it should be out of pride and not by force. This will ensure belongingness and trust in what an Organization and its People are expected to do, and the principles they stand together for.

I still remember the LPG Era with awe – Liberalization, Privatization & Globalization. Thanks to the then Government for changing the Behavioral Landscape of both Buyers and Sellers. Opening up of Indian Economy exposed Indian Consumers to multiple choices of Global Products, from otherwise compromised buying out of limited choices. Thanks to Maruti Suzuki, Japanese were amongst the earliest to take advantage of the situation.

Indian Brands in Consumer Durables segment paved way for much better Japanese products, not just because of Brand Preference. Process Leadership of Indian Companies gave way to the perceived Product Leadership by becoming licensed manufacturers or collaborators. This brought in Japanese Culture into Indian Organizations. It was early days in my career where “Company Uniforms” for executives was unheard of. Career Growth helped me understand the significance of wearing a Company Uniform with Pride and Belongingness, which I later adopted for the Organizations I lead, either formally or informally. And it also dawned on me that this is how a Brand is Built & Promoted – by Employees first and then all others next.

I did also notice, especially in consumer durables segment, Employees are encouraged to buy only own products and certainly discouraged from buying a Competitor’s product, irrespective of market standing. This does really make a case for What You Make is What You Get.

EVOLUTION:

SPELT Environment (Socio-Political-Economic-Legal-Technology) evolved alongside Market evolution. Concepts of TQM and QFD were liberally used in bringing together the stake holders for Mutual Good. Education system and Employee Patterns shifted along with Generational Shift & Demographic Changes. Supervision gave way to Facilitation and Managing gave way to Leading. 80:20 rule came to be realized – 20% of People work for future (5 Year Plans), while 80% work for the present (2 Years).

MANAGERS AND LEADERS:

As a widely travelled Intrapreneur, it makes me wonder the way Indian Organizations are structured. Probably it is more to do with societal expectations than those of Organizations. While the Global Organizations appear to be more flat, Majority of Indian Organizations continue to remain highly vertical. Exception can be in Services Sector. This could be either because of Indian Organizations still growing or to meet Career aspirations of Employees – who anticipate promotions periodically. Personally, I see this challenging. Money is not a problem but change in hierarchy is, unless there is scope for additional responsibility. Statistics puts this at 10% of total work force who can be considered for promotion, limitation being Organizational Growth. A certain percentage of retirement and recruitment is also essential for the Organizational upheaval.

I have also noticed, elsewhere in the World, except for HR Professionals, very rarely in other functions People Manage People. Functional and Process Management is clearly distinguished from People Management. There has to be a unique distinction in roles for People to become Managers, especially when the structure is flat. However in Indian Scenario, Managers in Hard Core functions (other than service functions) major responsibility is People Performance. And that is meant to Maintain Value.

Leaders, who are expected to Add Value, will look mostly the Progress and therefore Induce Change & Manage it for the Betterment.

LEADING FROM THE FRONT:

Management Styles will largely depend on the Nature of Business, Employee Demography and Organizational Life Cycle. Traditional Organizations which has more of Doers than Planners and Employee Educational Levels low to moderate, will call for Leaders who take responsibilities and Lead from the Front, mostly assisting & supporting people perform. Its more of Task Based Leadership wherein Employees are expected to meet their DRM obligations. Such Organizations will also be highly verticalised, rely on Procedures and have a great deal of Role Clarity. Very common wherever Manufacturing is involved.

LEADING FROM BEHIND:

Demography induced Generational Shifts have paved way for Modern Organizations. Employee Education Levels are superior to that of Traditional Industries. Role of Managers are that of Facilitators, as commonly practiced elsewhere in the World. Majority of such organizations have stringent recruitment procedures and are generally flat in structure – as seen in Services Industry. The above-mentioned quotable quote pretty much sums up the state of affairs that we are in. AI adoption has intensified in all walks of life.  2023 will perhaps go down as the year of ChatGPT. Generative AI (Gen_AI) models led by ChatGPT and including Microsoft Co-pilot, Google Gemini, Llama, Whisper, and Claude, using Large Language Models (LLM), not only became pervasive but also impacted all sectors and endeavors of humankind. Over the last couple of years, we also realized that with growing AI adoption, stronger governance is vital to balance innovation with safeguards on accuracy, accountability, autonomy, bias, ethics, fairness, integrity, morality, privacy, safety, transparency, trust, and sustainability

Various challenges and misuse of AI that we encountered included bias, deep fakes, election interference using AI, copyright infringements, job losses, carbon emissions, misinformation, cyber-attacks, monopolistic practices, and low-quality content.  Biases could be algorithmic, gender, language, and political in nature. AI regulatory frameworks have come to the fore with all governments engaging in said efforts.  Governance of AI technologies has become essential for governments across the world. Over the last decade, 40+ countries have enacted 200+ AI and related legislations while over 90 countries have developed AI governance frameworks, which will eventually translate to legislation. This is a far cry from just one AI legislation in 2016.  These governmental efforts are complemented by supranational agencies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency of the United Nations (UN) & Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD). High-technology giants such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, and Apple are also shaping the discourse in terms of AI technologies and its impact.

As we stand today, AI governance, regulation, and policy are, at best, a work-in-progress worldwide.  Due to the rapid pace of evolution of the technology, a well-defined, comprehensive, and end-to-end AI policy framework remains a challenge. The wish list is that this AI governance framework should offer clarity and direction to all stakeholders, while remaining adaptable to the rapid evolution of technology. This investigation explores the various intergovernmental and supranational initiatives like GPAI, AI for Good, UNESCO AI, AI Impact summit, AI safety summit, and Bletchley declaration towards AI governance and regulation.

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) was launched in June 2020 by OECD subsuming earlier discussions on the topic by various nations as early as 2017. India was a founder member of this partnership along with EU and US.  This is a global coordination platform that brings together governments, academia, industry, and civil society to ensure AI is developed in a way that is human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy. Various working groups have been formed centered along various themes such as Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work, and Innovation & Commercialization. These efforts have been complemented by UNESCO as well as G20 & G7, who have factored the GPAI inputs and deliberated on AI in their respective summits and working group discussions.  The focus is on ethics, policy, and responsible AI and not legislation and there are multiple layers of meetings all year around in addition to a global GPAI summit. These policy recommendations are generally non-binding and feed into major summit agendas including recently-held AI impact summit in India.

AI for Good

AI for Good is a similar initiative of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with 40 UN sister agencies towards AI for society. This global- platform aims to identify practical applications of AI to advance the UN SDG and scale these solutions for global impact. These include AI applications in healthcare, education, disaster management, climate change and smart cities. An AI for Good global summit is conducted annually to add to the narrative to:

• Apply AI to real-world global problems
• Accelerate progress toward SDGs
• Promote ethical and inclusive AI
• Foster global collaboration

UNESCO AI framework

The UNESCO AI framework is another important global effort to guide ethical and human-centric AI development. From 2018, this has been in the works as an extension to UNESCO’s mandate to advance ethics of science and digital transformation. Adopted in November 2021 by 190+ countries, this framework sets standards for how AI should be designed, developed, and used responsibly. This is the first truly global AI ethics agreement focusing on the following areas:

• AI Governance & Regulation
• Data Governance
• Education & Skills
• Gender Equality
• Environmental Impact
• Ethical Impact Assessment

This serves as a reference and ethical guideline for national AI laws and policies and is complementary to GPAI and AI for Good, which focus on policy collaboration and application areas respectively. However, all of them are non-binding and part of a shared universe with multi-stakeholders such as government, UN agencies, Tech giants, civil society, and academia.  Simultaneously, various countries are also working on their own sets of AI governance frameworks and policy. Some of them like US have been following a market-driven Ai regulatory approach. On expected lines, China has a state-driven approach whereas the EU follows a rights-driven approach.

AI safety summit

The AI safety summit hosted by the United Kingdom for the first time in 2023 was a landmark event with respect to regulation of AI. The main objective of the summit was to address the risks and safe development of advanced AI systems, especially frontier models like generative AI in the larger context of AI governance. The policy recommendation and deliberations of complementary initiatives such as GPAI, AI for Good and UNESCO AI were feeders to this major global summit. At this summit, most advanced nations such as US, UK, China, India, and the EU more or less agreed towards a road map, which is defined in Bletchley Declaration, a global agreement by national governments towards regulation and human oversight of AI. Signed by 28 nations, this Bletchley Declaration affirms that AI should be designed, developed, deployed, and used in a manner that is safe, human-centric, trustworthy and responsible. A subsequent AI safety summit in Seoul in May 2024 and AI action summit in Paris in February 2025 reaffirmed these concerns. The Seoul summit advocated the establishment of multi-stakeholder safety institutes and testing frameworks to address concerns with respect to AI governance. The Paris summit saw 100 countries participate and sign the declaration on promotion of inclusive and sustainable AI. This summit focused on global coordination, policy alignment, inclusive governance, and balancing innovation with regulation.

Some of the guiding commitments of the Bletchley declaration are as follows:

• Shared understanding of AI risks including General-purpose AImodels also called Frontier of AI especially in areas such as biotechnology, cyber security applications and misinformation.
• International cooperation on AI safety research, standards and policies
• Risk mitigation and safety frameworks
• Scientific and evidence-based policies across countries to ensure safety while recognizing that approaches may differ based on national circumstances and applicable legal frameworks.

AI Impact Summit 2026

The AI Impact Summit refers to a set of international forums focused on the real-world impact of AI, especially its economic, societal, and developmental consequences.  How AI affects economies, jobs, governance, and society, and how to maximize benefits while minimizing risks……

 The first AI Impact Summit 2026 hosted by India, marked a significant milestone in global AI dialogue, especially as one of the first large-scale AI summits held in the global south. This summit saw participation from 100+ countries and 20+ international organizations as well as the major tech giants in the AI space. This included foundation model companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind), big tech platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), infrastructure leaders (NVIDIA) and emerging ecosystem players (Indian startups working on sovereign AI and home-grown LLMs).  At the AI Impact Summit 2026, the “7 Chakras framework” was used as a conceptual model to organize discussions and actionable policy directions around AI. These chakras represent key pillars of AI development and impact as follows:

• Human capital
• Inclusion
• Innovation
• Governance
• Safety & Trust
• Economic development
• Sustainability

While realizing that AI is a growth engine for economic transformation, this framework and summit provided a structured roadmap for countries to develop AI ecosystems while balancing innovation, inclusion, and safety. Other outcomes included a strong push for inclusive AI with enhanced access for developing nations in the global south, focus on digital infrastructure for public good, enhanced global and multistakeholder collaboration and workforce transformation.

India’s Approach in AI Governance

India is no doubt emerging as a global leader in AI governance and regulation. India’s approach has been pragmatic and non-aggressive as also veering towards combining innovation, inclusion, and ethical oversight without the risk of overregulation. It is a middle path akin to our non-alignment approach in geopolitics. Distinctly stakeholder-centric as opposed to state-focused approach of China or strict rights approach like Europe or market-focused like USA.  India has been an active participant of various intergovernmental and supranational forums engaged in AI regulation and governance from their inception. India chaired the GPAI in 2024 and hosted the 2023 edition of the GPAI summit at New Delhi.

The successful conduct of the AI Impact Summit 2026 reaffirms India arriving at the high table of AI governance and regulation. Of course, there remains a lot to be done. An overarching, binding and comprehensive AI act under the ambit of the Digital India act is needed which subsumes multiple laws such as Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; IT Rules, 2021 (platform accountability), sectoral frameworks, and AI governance guidelines.
